MTU settings are fairly ISP dependant. What works best on talk talk might not work well at all for his ISP. You can usually find the recommeded MTU on the ISP website, however I don't think this is an issue as past his ISP routers can cut packets up to fit MTU requirements and merge them back together again, so long as his MTU matches the MTU of the kit he's directly connected to he should be fine.
