Actually it would make more sense wouldn't it?

Jets fly regular routes day in day out and weather conditions can remain the same for several days, combined with the fact after the first sighting there will be many many more people looking so someone is more likely to be in just the right place.


But the military (and the civilian aviation industry) would certainly have any "missile/rocket" on radar that close it would have interfered with LAX etc too.
