i dont do consoles but im gonna help a work college out and upgrade their sons PS5.

From what i understand any pcie4 nvme ssd will work right? or Does it have to be a top of the range fast boi...

Please any suggestions to make and model 2TB... Cheap as possible but not garbage.

Any PCI-E 4.0, but 5500 MB/s or faster is recommended, you will also need a low profile heatsink if the drive you pick doesn't come with one

I've got a Crucial P5 Plus fitted in mine, with one of the heatsinks (QIVYNSRY) recommended from this guide

There are plenty about and at times offers a plenty! Recently i have seen some good deals on 2Tb Samsung 980 Pro (heatsink version) 2Tb WD SN850X, 2Tb Seagate Firecuda 530 and 2Tb Crucial P5Plus All around the £160 quid mark (Add a tenner for a cheap heatsink if it doesnt come with one). I have also seen other PCIE Gen 4.0 such as the WD SN770 and the Crucial P3Plus that report lower than the "recommended" speed but are cheaper and still work fine, as long as its PCIE 4.0 and around the 5000 read speed it will be fine (Unless there are some titles that are released that REALLY push the loading times). Unfortunately i have not seen any mad deals on them for a little while but about £170 for a drive and heatsink will get you sorted (Or about £120-130 if you want to be a bit more frugal)

WD Black SN850, Samsung 980 Pro, Crucial P5 Plus, Seagate Firecuda 530, but there are others and as long as they meet the speed requirements above there won't be any difference. Best thing to do is keep an eye on HotUKDeals, there's been a few 2TB drives for £150-160 lately.

You do need a heatsink though, so make sure to either get a drive with one already or buy one separately.

They were the other day but gone back up to about £132 atm.
4 hours ago they were cheap again :(

Just wait another two weeks for the auction place to have a percentage off code again, that usually triggers all the other retailers.

That heatsink for the money is excellent, quite heavy and decent thermal pads on each side, using two myself.

I managed to grab a 1TB SN850X for £85 quid a little while ago for mine (Actually got 2, one for my PC and one for my PS5) and after getting Plus Premium i have been looking for bigger but not pulled the trigger on 2Tb as if yet hoping there is some silly deals on a 4Tb in the future and i can "put up" with the 1Tb till then.

Those thermalright m.2 heatsinks look like they have gone up silly money as well unless you buy from aliexpress.

Still £4.59 for the ones I bought (gone up a pound) from a large UK retailer. Just about fits in the PS5.

Is there any external drives you can load PS5 games onto yet, the last time I looked they were for PS4 games

I mean to play the game from the drive like you can with PS$ games

No, ps5 games only work on the internal storage or nvme

I picked up the Kingston fury 2 TB with spreader.

Previously had the 850 with sabrent PS5 heat sink.

Reused the heatsink

The PS5 is the first games machine I've had since the Atari 2600 in the early 80s and was gobsmacked it came with such a small drive.
Any user would have paid the extra few quid for a bigger drive.

I believe it was a conscious decision due to the IO Architecture and pricing of the onboard SSD, after all they make nothing out of people putting brands of NVME SSDs in their systems they make no money from unlike Microsoft which make a lot of money from their stupidly expensive storage drives for Series S/X. For a lot of people now the space would be fine if they have good internet and can often download and install a game in under 10 mins.

I have my Integrated storage, 1Tb SN850X and a 4Tb 2.5" WD Passport drive with all my PS4 games on currently.

And as if by magic the 4Tb Renegade Fury is £287... Very tempting...

Just FYI, there are some silly deals on 4tb Drives today mainly the Crucial P3 Plus for around 200 quid which is an incredible price and I have pulled the trigger. I decided to go for it after a couple of times recently updated have not been able to install because of lack of space even though I have an additional 1tb installed so I decided why not at that price.

Unless i'm missing something isn't that a pci3.0 drive, so would not pass the speed test to be an internal SSD/NVME for PS5? Still, very cheap for a PC or other device though.

Edit: My mistake Plus is the pci4.0 version. I'm tempted now (albeit for a PC).

Nope, the P3 plus is still PCIe 4.0 and only slightly under the requirements but has been tested by many places and it functions just fine and loading times are the same as other high spec drives so the IO may report the great speeds on SN850x, firecuda 530 eTc but there is no difference in loading games. Where it is lacking is copying from the internal drive to the external drive as it’s DRAMless so once the buffer is small it slows dramatically on the copy. This isn’t a big deal as I will only have one or 2 games on the internal and the rest on the 4tb.

Here are a couple of good articles that have tested on PS5 and PC.
