Someone asked me to help them get a 2tb SSD for their PS5...

Nope, the P3 plus is still PCIe 4.0 and only slightly under the requirements
So as I said, it doesn't actually meet Sony's requirements of 5500Mb/s. Whilst it may be fine, there is always the possibility that further down the line it isn't, if developers rigidly enforce minimum SSD speed.

Where it is lacking is copying from the internal drive to the external drive as it’s DRAMless so once the buffer is small it slows dramatically on the copy.

Not just the fact it's DRAMless, but also it's QLC flash.
Once the SLC cache is exhausted e.g. if moving games from the internal storage, the transfer rate ends up at <70Mbps, which is slower than most hard drives. Additionally it's got a very low write endurance, meaning if you are using it to move games back/forward, or even the huge updates that games receive these days, potentially you could easily burn through that

P5 Plus 2TB is a much safer choice imo (£20 more than the 2TB P3 Plus)

IIRC 80-90% of the work done in a PS5 regarding IO and Storage is read. This drive will not be used for moving games back and forth between the internal drive and the 4Tb probably just the small amount I currently have on my internal drive and the rest will be re-downloaded. The speed it will download will not surpass the limitations of the drive.

I would also note that SSDs generally slow down as they fill up so a drive that reports that it meets the speed requirements may not when it’s almost full.

Yeah, I get your point that there may be a time when something comes along that will utilise the higher speeds if that comes or a Pro arrives with some games that can take advantage of a top end gen 4 drive then I will stick this in my PC for extra storage and buy a fast 4 or 8 tb drive which will probably be down to a similar price as this.

For the price and utility of such a size drive it worth the money.

The PS5 is the first games machine I've had since the Atari 2600 in the early 80s and was gobsmacked it came with such a small drive.
Any user would have paid the extra few quid for a bigger drive.
When the PS5 was released a bigger 2TB gen4 m2 drive cost a hell of a lot more then a few extra quid
(A 2TB gen4 M2 was over £300 )

I have been using mine over the weekend with Jedi Survivor and Fortnite, i havnt noticed any difference whatsoever maybe there is a slight loading performance increase but its not something i can see. I will try Ratchet and Clank when its on Plus, if anything should show it i expect that will.
