Someone crashed into me! Is this harsh?

Well I wasnt shouting AT them. It was more of a "annoyed confusion" then it was a calm conversation really as the man was apologetic. I just said to the girl " how can you hit a parked car in an empty car park?" and i got no reply.

And how much would be too much for a new bumper, labour, respray etc?

a) Don't shout. She didn't mean to do it.

b) You've saved them a fair bit of hassle if she wasn't insured.

c) You've saved yourself money come renewal time compared with if you'd gone through his insurance, as you'd have been "involved in a non-fault accident" which [wrongly IMHO] can increase your insurance premium.

I sometimes take my RC car to empty car parks (nerd +1) and on several occasions despite there being hundreds of empty spaces driving instructors would get learners to practice parking next to my car. I remember my instructor always making me practice parking into a bay with at least a car on one side as well.

I now get around it by parking diagonally over 4 bays :p

Unlucky though. Well done for not being out of pocket but your post does read as if you got the boys round and leant on him quite heavily though.

Couldn't the dad keep his hand on the handbrake is she is that bad at driving to hit the only car in the carpark  ? Tbh imo it's equally his fault as the daughters...

I suppose but at the same time shows a complete and utter lack of common sense on her side. I mean we all started from scratch but avoiding a single stationary in a car park really isn't that difficult no matter how novice driver you are.

And why would they care you hadn't told them you didn't claim on someone else's insurance when they crashed into your parked car? :p

Becuase "it makes you more of a risk" and it means they can worm their way out of paying you money.
Then get you done for insurance fraud making you "a bigger risk" and generating more revenue for the insurance business.

No real way to find out though.

Personally I think you saved them a lot of aggro but on car parks no-ones insured so I'd consider youself very lucky.

M.

Not always. It depends on who owns the land.

We have a couple of supermarkets here and they are on council land and the roads there are owned and controlled by council. This land will be treated as public highway.

Is a carpark considered private property? Doesn't that mean you don't need to hold a license/insured to be driving?

A car park, if the public have access to it is considered a public place in the eyes of the law for things like driving without insurance/licence (if say you needed an access card to get in it might be different).
Anywhere the public have easy access to is classed as that, including say a normally private field if there is a public event going on (so say Farmer Giles opens his top field up to the public for a Fair, it would be classed as Public and his Son wouldn't be allowed to drive uninsured - once the event is over and th public leave his son would be fine to drive uninsured*).

*There was a case where pretty much that happened, a Lord's son got done for driving uninsured because there was a public event behing held on the land that day.

generally speaking a car park is public regardless of who owns it unless its barriered off or says something like "fakesville golf club members only", pretty narrow example but hope it gets the point accross
if the majority of the public have access to it, by payment or otherwise, it is considered a public place

I was quoted over £1000 from a body shop to have one wing replaced and sprayed.

An uninsured driver hit you, and the choices for them were pay you up to shut you up, or face the criminal implications of what they did. TBH, the guy is probubly feeling quite lucky.

And as for being angry and shouting, if some idiot drives into you through no fault of your own I think your fully entitled to show your displeasure at it happening. Obviously dont punch the guy or anything, but were entitled to be peed off!

When learning to drive I always parked between or next to cars. Its much easier to see where you are in relation to cars than in relation to the lines on the road.

You've done remarkably well there.

Usually getting hit and going through insurance puts you at a loss, the inconvenience of negotiating with them and the dreaded approved repairer, more hassle if you want to pick the people who do the work.

And if you car is a write off, it's even worse, as more often than not, a car that can be written off easily is worth more to you than it's cash value, which you will have to haggle for.
