Someone explain how a pin sentry works please....

Interesting piece on the standards behind pin-sentry: http://www.cl.cam.ac.uk/~sjm217/papers/fc09optimised.pdf

Cool, I'll give that a read when I have more free time :)

And for cards not being able to hold a power source - maybe - but this one certainly does: http://www.visaeurope.com/en/about_us/innovation/visa_codesure.aspx

That's pretty cool. I imagine the next step would be to somehow seed the user's fingerprint into the hashing algorithm :)

I don't think they are unique. When I am at my parents' and want to check my account, I use my mum's or brother's pin sentry perfectly fine. I also know my mum uses my brother's sometimes.

Otherwise, I ahve also wondered about this. Great piece of technology, however it works. I'm quite happy it remaining a mystery, despite always wanting to know how things work. There's not enough mystery these days...

I am using barclays pin sentry to login on natwest website, it does works, I do authorise payment with same one pin sentry on both websites(Barclay and natwest) since last couple years and its going well... I guess banks have sourced the pin sentries from same supplier (lazy vendor does not seems to bothered about changing software settings or even hash codes.). only difference is the colour of plastics.

You do realise this is a 9 year old thread you signed up to post in?

Actually that's useful to know as I have accounts with both banks and using two card gizmos is a pain. I was thinking of trying the "wrong" one but with Covid i didn't want to risk the hassle of locking a card. So thanks for reviving an old thread with useful info!
