something better than TV Speakers

They will work, but don't expect the DM39 to drive them with plenty of power. It's rated at 30w into 6 Ohm. BX5's are 8 Ohm with a 30-120w amp recommendation.

Thanks for explaining it, so basically i need an amp etc that is minimum 8 Ohm and at least say mid range of that 30-120w to comfortably use those speakers
I have my heart set on those speaker now lol
Like the colour and look of them

Yeah, best to get an amp that has the power to do the speakers justice. As nice as they look, it's not much use them looking all nice if you're not going to get good performance from them. ;)

There are some integrated amps that will have enough power in the same price range as the DM39. This Onkyo is a very good price and can output 65w per channel, so has plenty of power. SuperFi have quite a few choices around the £150 mark.

If you don't mind buying used, then there are some really good amps to be had for less from various auction places. Some people do prefer to buy new though for peace of mind, so if you'd prefer new then you can still get a decent amp for £150 or a bit less.

If you are wanting one of these stereo units that's more than just an amp, like the DM39, then you're going to struggle to find one that will provide enough power for £150. Generally the cheaper ones are best paired with bookshelf speakers that don't require a much power. Marantz do one that will output 60w per channel, but it's £300.

Thank you for that ^
Could i possibly add a DAB tuner etc to that onkyo you have linked?

I would rather buy new, because in the next month me and wife will be going our separate ways so i will just pop into richer sounds and get tv, speakers etc all in one go

Also i notice a few lower end amps do not have optical in for tv/ps4...
Will i be able to connect tv ok to the onkyo amp you linked?

Well that's the beauty of an integrated amp, as they have 5 or 6 inputs, you connect various devices to them. Whether it be a CD player, a DAB radio, a DAC (digital to analogue converter) so you can connect a digital source up. In the case of a DAB radio, you'd need one with analogue audio output to connect to the amp. Same goes for a TV, it would analogue RCA audio output.

Maybe an AV receiver would be a better option, as they have digital connections as well as analogue, so if you have a TV with optical output only, you wouldn't have to worry about external DACs. Although you could probably just HDMI anyway. Not sure about DAB tuners though. Many have AM/FM listed in the specs, but I can't see DAB mentioned. Not even on more expensive ones.

If you've got a smartphone or a tablet, you could use that to stream internet radio to it. I've done that with my phone, streaming radio to a Blueooth receiver connected to my amp. Having said that though, doesn't look like any budget models have Bluetooth, although connecting a cheap Blueooth receiver is no problem.

What Hi Fi review of the A7

Unsurprisingly, connecting a device using a standard 3.5mm analogue cable doesn’t result in quite the same level of audio quality, but it’s still a match for AirPlay, and those wanting to connect something with an optical output can use a mini-optical cable – that 3.5mm aux-in doubles-up as a digital connection.
