I'm looking to drop some serious cash into a car. My criteria is quite wide, I don't care if it's a coupe, saloon or convertible. I'm about 6 months away from buying (heck, I won't even be back in the UK for another 3 months) but I thought i'd ask now so I have some early opinions.

In addition to just wanting a nice car I'm planning on keeping the car for about a year and then i'm going to move back to Sydney. The car will be sent via ship and possibly sold once i'm Sydney side. Profit will be made and I guess the one big criteria is that the car must be a model that is sold in Australia (the penalties otherwise can be huge, as to go through a full 'new car' inspection).

For example -

Australia - 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo PDK, 2000 miles - $300,000 AUD (£196K GBP)

UK - 2010 Porsche 911 Turbo PDK, 7500 miles - $112,000 (£74k GBP)

So yes, I will have to keep the car for a year in the UK and most likely eventually have to drop my Aussie price a little due to it being an import but absolute worst case i'm going to have an awesome car and still make some profit after having driven it for over a year if I decide to sell.

So......what have I been looking at?

1.) Porsche 911 Turbo (997)

Pros and cons:
+ Nice daily drive
+ Reasonable servicing(?)
+ Not OMG flash but those who know......know.
- New 911 Turbo model out very soon

2.) Aston Martin - any model, I don't really know anything about AM but liking the DB9 and Rapide. I love any AM that has the really big front grille that seems to be on 2013 Rapide (out of my price range) but does anyone know any other, older, AM that has this large grille??

3.) Bentley Continental

+ Quite a rare car
- Still seen as bit of a car a **** would dive.
- Bit too.....much. It's mahoosive and maybe a bit too flash if that's possible.

4.) Audi R8 V10

+ That lovely Lambo engine and the way it's on show
+ Apparently a comfortable daily drive

I'm leaning towards one car - the 911 Turbo. I had a 911 Carerra 4S for a few weeks and loved it, the turbo is just a beast but yet is a good daily driver and isn't too flash and is very popular....

Are there other cars that should be considered? I know sod all about Maserati for example....

You'll have no problem selling an Aston Martin in Australia for the right price.

Do you have PR in Australia? A person I know (I'm loathed to call him a friend) did this with a BMW M3 recently, but for himself, not to profit on.

I'll be on a 457 Visa

While no help to your thread, why aren't more people shipping supercars over there in larger quantities and undercutting their prices with significant profits still to be had? I'm assuming there is some eye watering tax to be added on the import?

Because you can't - you can only take your personal car over - which you must have owned in the UK for more than a year - and you can only do it a limited number of times to prevent people from doing exactly this.

It's the sort of thing you can do as a one-of when emigrating if you've got the capital to buy the car a year beforehand.

I'd go for the 911 Turbo.

There's a few things stopping this happening more regularly -

- People on valid visas can only import one car
- Many people lack the funds to make such a purchase in the first place
- The car has to be owned for at least a year before import
- There are a few taxes such as import tax and luxury car tax

Ah, Australians and their crazy rules. Learning stuff today!

I'd go for the R8. You didn't put a negative on the R8.. ;)

What is the price comparison for the R8 V10?

Great idea though, guy I work with is over here on but plans to take his E46 M3 back over when he goes back

Wish I did this when I was on a 457, didn't have the capital unfortunately. I'd still say go with an Aston. Even a cheaper V8 Vantage will net you decent profit.

I agree with your first point but not with the second. My brother has an R8 and I can't say I'm a fan to be honest. Interior is cheap, it rattles and squeaks and definitely doesn't feel like a £100k+ car should. It also has an annoying crabbing sensation when you try to turn the wheels at low speeds (a "feature" according to Audi). His is especially annoying as he's got a Stasis exhaust which makes your ears hurt at anything above 1500rpm.

Out of the cars you've chosen I'd go with the 911 but if it was my money I'd be buying a Ferrari 430, much better car to drive and there's plenty available within your budget.

I Work for a shipping company and we are the export Hub in the UK for Bently, Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Jaguar, McLaren, Landrover and BMW Mini. We had over 750 ship calls last year shipping 475,000 vehicles around the world inc Australia.

I have driven all the cars on your list as we also ship private customer cars so get some really exotic stuff come in.

I would personally add the New F-type Jag to your list as it is really something special.

My personal favourite Aston is the V12 vantage as in the flesh it just seems to look better than the other models but being 195cm tall I find the aston cabin a bit cramped :D but the McLaren cabin is amazingly comfy all though it has a more high tech theme to it than the aston.

Hope there is some info above that you find usefull.
