Something flash for £60-80k?

If it that's easy to just export a car and make lots of money in Australia? Why doesn't everyone do it?

Because its not that easy and you need a lot of money to begin with to buy the car, stay in the uk for 12 months with it, ship it to Australia, then pay quite a lot in tax when it arrives.

It is election time this year too, so expect visa changes, if you count on getting one in 18 months time I wouldn't be so sure...

Well, it's not easy....but when everything lines up it is. As said above:

- First you need sponsorship or Australian PR residency. Both hard to get unless you have a skill which is is need or a company is going to sponsor you.

- Then you need this kind of cash (not finance because you're exporting)

- Then you need to own and use the car for a year

- Then you need to get it shipped and go through the Aussie customs, pay taxes, etc.

Not something you'd do for fun.....but seeing as I wanted a nice car anyway and I was thinking of returning to Australia anyway.....it all adds up.

SO what if Australia doesn't work out? I'm still where I was before - I can sell the car after having had a bit of fun or keep it.

Getting a visa isn't an issue, I can get a 457 in a couple of weeks end to end and have three companies that are already asking if/when i'm looking to return. I have the skill set which is in very high demand in Aus and I have Australian experience.....

Australia to a hammering recently due to some changes, lead to a bit of a shortage in the skilled areas so they're keen to keep things nice and smooth running.

Be difficult to sell an import of that value perhaps? Can't imagine many places having a quarter of a million to give you in cash, most dealers would want you to trade in/upgrade?

Just putting the visa out there, if you get 18 months down the line, the rules change and you are unable to get a visa, your stuck with a 75k car which will now have lost 20k if you wanted to sell in the UK...

What is the price comparison for the R8 V10?

Great idea though, guy I work with is over here on but plans to take his E46 M3 back over when he goes back

Actually not as good as the Porsche....

AUS: 2010 Audi R8 5.2 6k miles - $234k AUD (£152k GB)
UK: 2010 Audi R8 5.2 10k miles - $101k AUD(£66k GBP)

Also, not sure if it's worth it with an E46 M3??!

Not really, when I was living there last time a few other guys at work sold their UK cars. They had to offer a little lower than other similar cars but no real issues selling.

I understand the point you're making, always a risk but the only way I could be stopped getting a Visa would be if the Aussie government stopped all companies from hiring overseas workers - which they simply are not going to do, Australia relies massively on foreign workers and stopping them would only harm the economy.

in my industry, construction equipment. Australia are paying around 50% more than the UK. The market is rife with export of new machines against manufactures hard work to stop this. The UK is a heavily subsidised market. Traders and people with money are extorting this to their benefit hugely by getting a scape goat like a genuine trader to buy machines using the traders money for a commision. Nobody will sell to the traders as this as been a growing trend for years. Manufactures are demanding end user purchases. It makes for a very hard life. Somebody who can lay out 500k and wait 6 months to return 750k.

madness, money makes money

P.S I say the Aston.

You're comparing the wrong prices. You need to be looking at what a higher mileage 2009 car is making in Aus to account for the years worth of use/depreciation you'll be absorbing in the uk. Just something else to factor into your calculations

I noticed that... The mileage used in the comparisons are the wrong way round.

Cool idea though. If you know you are off to aus, put all your stuff in storage, sell house, move in with parents for the required period of ownership whilst at the same time buy a super car with equity from house.

3.) Bentley Continental

- Still seen as bit of a car a **** would drive.
Well that's because we hear a lot about the Cheshire set hooning about in them, surely perceptions in Australia would be different and it would be seen as a classy English car?

I see them every day, and actually they have always been well driven.

Aston Martin:
Vantage: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...01/advert-type/standard-listing?logcode=ucnnp

DBS: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...red-listing/dealer/13102/usedcars?logcode=flp

BMW:
M6: http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...01/advert-type/standard-listing?logcode=ucnnp

FERRARI:
Quite a few to choose from - F430 is the most modern you could probably get, but you could 'invest' in a low mileage F355 - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...radius/1501/postcode/nr172hd/page/4?logcode=p or a low mileage TESTAROSSA, but maybe they've risen too much already - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...radius/1501/postcode/nr172hd/page/4?logcode=p

LAMBORGHINI:
GALLARDO: Similar to an R8 I guess and overshadowed by the MURCIELAGO.

Leftfield option - DIABLO - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classif...page/2/postcode/nr172hd/radius/1501?logcode=p

Then there are loads of AMG Mercs perhaps?

So regarding the comments around the miles and age below are some revised calcs assuming I own for 2 years before selling (2010 UK vs 2008 Aus).

The aussie car market is a bit strange, they don't have a fraction of the depreciation we do here. Cars hold value very well - many people just buy new (I did). I bought at $71k, sold it back to the dealer at $60k after 18 months of ownership and they had it up for $67k the next day on the lot.

Bentley continental:
UK: 2010 models, 18k Miles, ~£75k ($115k Aud)
Australian examples from 2008 range from $220k AUD to $280k AUD.

Audi R8:
Uk 2010 models £60-70k GBP (~$105 AUD)
Australia 2009 models (only 1) = $230k AUD.

Aston Martin DB9 V12
UK models £70-75k for a 2010 ($115 AUD).
Australia 2008 AM DB9 = $220k AUD

Of course there are taxes and shipping but even with worst case scenarios I will still come up ahead :)

So the Vantage looks great but can't seem to find them on any Aussie car sales sites so it may be a case of it not being a model sold there.

I think the M6 falls into the same trap as the GTR.....not expensive enough in Australia (i.e the dealers are not ripping them off as much)

Although I did say 'flash' I think Ferrari and Lambo are a bit too much, would not be very good as daily drives. I think older cars would be a bad idea. They would all have to have the various aussie rules applied and retrofitted - sounds like a nightmare!
