Something is interfering with my overclock.

I just recently finished putting a new system together (pre-overclocked) and something seems to be dropping the CPU multiplier.

Could anyone help me out here? I can see the overlock in the BIOS and when I run CPUZ at startup it shows the correct values, but then it drops down like crazy.

I'm on Windows 7 btw.

SpeedStep/C1E. Has been on Intel CPUs since the Pentium 3. Same question gets asked at least once a week :)

Ahh I see. So, does the multiplier speed scale back up as you run demanding software?

I did a quick google search and I think I found a way to disable it through the power settings. However, if I can still get 4ghz when I need it, I might just leave it on.

Sometimes it can cause problems with overclocking (including me - i get a BSOD loading windows if i enable it) but if its stable with it on then keep it on.

It will increase the multi when needed and decrease it when not, keeping it cooler and saving some penny's on the leccy bill

Ahh ok, thanks for the advice. I had just turned off C1E and EIST in the BIOS, but I got a Black Screen of Death while installing WoW. Dunno what caused the black screen though...

Turning them off wont make it less stable.

The crash is independent of these being off but perhaps not of the overclock, make sure your settings are saved somewhere, reset to defaults then try installing it again. If it succeeds, I suggest calling ocuk to ask how to get your bundle stable.

I managed to install it by enabling them again, but I think I should probably do some testing to see how well the OC will hold up. Obviously I know next to nothing about it, but the settings look fine from what I can gather. Except for the DRAM voltage, which is at 1.660. Not sure if I should be worried about it being that high.

Some boards don't let you pick 1.65V exactly, the UD5 allows 1.64 or 1.66. Either's good.

That sounds odd, but fair enough. At least it's installed. Run intel burn test for a while, if it passes that then you can have considerable confidence that it's fine. I'm using v2.3, maximum stress level.

Ahh, that's reassuring. Could you show me where to find the best version for Windows 7 please? google searches for these programs tends to yield a load of different results.

I was planning it running some tests in Prime95 tonight to see what happens.

It's pretty much just solving simultaneous equations, so most versions work fine. There's an issue with some of them where you need to run 16 threads instead of 8, don't remember which ones.

I'm running this one using vista, confident it'll work just fine under windows 7. If it doesn't run check the readme, there's a couple of dependencies you might need to dl from microsoft if they're not already installed.

Cool. I'll give it a shot later. Thanks for the advice.

I'm hoping the Black screen was just a freak, but windows crashed while booting once as well, so I'm a little worried. Anyway, I'll do a bit of testing and see how things turn out.
