Something super is coming...

Guru got a review up of the MSI Gaming X-Trio now, and its only 1-2fps faster than the ref card :D

Even the Palit one on Guru3d is just that, 1-2 fps faster and with no overclocking headroom. A mere 40Mhz for all cards.
Even the better coolers on the MSI & Palit do not delivery that much. No wonder why the AIBs are annoyed with the Nvidia this time around, and the new cooler.
It gives them no headroom to design and develop cards and sell them with healthy profits.

It's knocking on the RTX 2080 Ti door.
You mean a custom 2080S overclocked to the hilt is not quite managing to knock on the door of a stock 2080 Ti. In Heaven, which isn't actually part of TPU's performance testing suite because it's a nonsense, and is only used to show overclocking gains. Presumably at 1080p too, given the framerates involved, which is where the 2080S gets closest to the 2080 Ti (yet nobody's buying either to play at that resolution). In reality the 2080 Ti is 18% faster comparing the two FE cards on equal footing - a gap that would increase when overclocking the 2080 Ti too, due to the larger bandwidth gains to be had from its wider memory bus.

I run Heaven and like it. It is a good benchmark replicating the results which you may observe in half the game titles, the GeForce optimised ones.
Just look at the review again and see in how many games the Radeons behave very poorly.
For a comparison, the reference RX 5700XT gets 111 FPS, OCed it gets 118 FPS.
Vega 64 gets only 91 FPS. https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-radeon-rx-5700-xt/33.html

Like I said and people were like, no way. He's lying

The point is that you buy the Zotac for 780$, OC it and get not only all these things:
  • Solid performance increase over the original RTX 2080
  • Fastest memory ever seen on a graphics card — 15.5 Gbps
  • RTX Technology
  • Overclocked out of the box
  • Idle fan-stop
  • Power limit increased
  • No price increase over existing RTX 2080
  • Backplate included
  • Highly energy efficient
  • DLSS could lift the card to 4K 60 FPS performance
  • Game bundle includes both Control and Wolfenstein: Youngblood
  • SLI support
  • VESA Adaptive-Sync, HDMI 2.0b, USB-C, DisplayPort 1.4, 8K support
But also close enough performance to the 1000$ RTX 2080 Ti.

The reviews make it seem like a good jump from a 2080 considering it's the same price? Why is everyone so unhappy with the 2080S?

Can’t but help being underwhelmed by the 2080 super. Barely worth it over a stock 2080 which now seems to be matched by the 2070 S, which incidentally seems to be the bargain of the century, this side of hearing damage ;)

Not all reviewers. The shills yes, like WCCFTECH, techpowerspot etc.
The others are just laughing at it.

It's more that it's seriously underwhelming given the performance gains we just saw for the 2060S and 2070S, that alongside the fact that they decided to hold off on it for a couple of weeks.
