Hi all,

Specs first

i7 4770k
Asrock Z87 Extreme 3
16Gb Patriot RAM DDR3
GTX 1080ti
Corsair RM 1000x
Corsair 800D case
Corsaie H100 cooler

This mother board replaced a Gigabyte Z87X-OC as the Gigabyte has always had a warm boot problem i.e. if you reboot 50% of the time it would stick in a boot loop and would need a cmos reset. Last week after installing my 1080ti I had to reboot to update drivers and it got permaently stuck in a boot loop. After trying a few thing it did eventually reach Windows but then reset its self. The second time this happened there was an audible pop :( Since then it never got back into Windows. As the mobo had caused problems in the past and my old psu was over 10 years old I have replaced them with the Asrock mobo and Corsair PSU.

Everything has been put back together and I'm pretty sure its all wired correctly but now I get a problem before I even power on the PC. One connecting the mains to the psu the system powers on very quickly (my H100 and 1080ti lights both light up) then powers off. It will go on and off once per second and just does this constantly.

Anyone know whats going on?!

if it turns on when you connect to mains, i.e without using an ON button, then try checking the front panel PWR header from motherboard to power switch

i would try it out of the case, something is shorting it by the sound of it.

Just build a basic set-up on the mobo cardboardbox or similar.

1 stick of ram, no graphics card, no hard drive - just to get into bios

Remove the motherboard from the case & try runing it on a wooden table or on a cardboard box.

It sounds like it's shorting out on your case.

You're looking to get the bare bones of the system able to boot - so the motherboard, power and data connectors, and peripherals plugged in the back.

Just set this up on a cardboard box, its doing the same thing with and without the gfx card attached :( I think the pop may have been the cpu.

Is there anything I might be missing? Pretty sure the mobo headers are ok. The H100 has sata power and is plugged into the cpu fan header.

Reseat the RAM first.

Then take the CPU out and check for any bent pins in the CPU socket. Even upload a couple photos of the pins here so we can double check for you.

One more thing to try, is using the stock CPU cooler. You might not realise it, but maybe you've over or under-tightened one area of the CPU cooler and this could be enough to cause you problems.

Just looked at the pins in the socket, all okay. Attached the stock cooler and its the same. When I plug in the psu the cpu fan twitches every second or so and will not power on.

Is the motherboard still out of the case ? There should be no power going to the cpu fan just by plugging in a psu

If you have put the motherboard back - does the same happen if you remove the front PWR header from the mobo ? if it doesn't 'twitch' without the PWR header connected, then manually 'short' the + and - PWR pins with a paperclip to try and start it

8 pin and 24pin ATX cables firmly in their sockets ?

Glad to hear it.

You should stress-test your system to make sure there's no damage to it from the PSU.

Prime95 and Memtest86+ are the usual choices.
