Not sure if this is the right forum.

For the last 2 nights my net connection has been pretty poor, I have a 20mb connection with Virgin Media and right now I'm lucky if i can get a 100k-200k download speed.
I've called Virgin Media and they've told me there isn't a problem in my area (Ashford, Kent) so I'm left assuming there's a problem with my hardware or software.

I use adaware/spybot/Nod32 and do regular scans, going to do another 1 tonight to make sure.

Is there anyway to see which programs on my computer are accessing the net and downloading? Just to make sure I don't have a rogue program causing all my problems.

Try safe mode with networking perhaps, but sounds like that's not the problem.

Rule out the router by connecting directly to the modem.

Post on the virgin newsgroup for support (instructions are in another thread on this forum or virgin media tech support forum).

I've had rubbish net in Bristol since october/november, possibly before, but I wasn't around then. Still no resolution, though in the last week things have improved. I was getting up to 95% packet loss at peak hours, and wild pings all over 150 ms, making gaming impossible, browsing irritating and downloading slow. It's affected my work too, I may claim some money back as it's just not on.

The network is massively oversubscribed, but they're not doing enough to rectify the issue, perhaps hoping some people will pay to leave or similar and avoid spending on upgrades. Also, for some reason totally unknown, their download limits cease at 9pm, which is pretty much peak time, and thus the whole network gets rammed. They should just get rid of the limits, most of the problems seem to stem from high upload volumes on local UBRs.

In short, I'm pretty sick of it. If you post on the newsgroup you may find it's a small local issue that's fixable, or a problem with your modem etc. Just hope you're not in an oversubscribed area.

Are there any good forums to find out if you're in an oversubscribed area? Little comes up when I search for my area in google. I guess this is a plus :p. Was thinking of changing to them (for cost reasons!).

Is it a cable connection or via a BT line? You could try the BT speedtest page if it's the latter and find out if you're limited at all. Just because your router states it's connected at 10,000 + the BT side can limit you if you're router has been disconnecting a lot and messed up your IP profile.
