This isn't a medical thread, I'm just looking to see if these things happen.

Last night I was eating, something not hard, and I heard this crunch. It turns out that part of my tooth had come off. Very weird since it isn't hurting and it doesn't look rotten. So does this just happen? Do teeth just break sometimes?

Go to the dentist. I'd like to think my teeth won't just break being made of enamel; maybe hear a crack after eating something hard or trying to chew diamonds but I think something might be up.

Yeah I had a molar that split in half. It had basically rotten from the inside and it was just the shell of the tooth left. It wasn't painful but had to have a crown in place - the nerve is still ok and in good health, it was just the top half of the tooth that had "died" basically.

Yup it happens.

Not if they're healthy.

How do you tell if a tooth is rotten on the inside?! This is why people should go to the dentist at least once a year. I know so many people who havent been for years.

I said it doesn't look rotten, but it still could be. The last time I went to the dentist was 14 months ago. I've booked an appt for this afternoon.

I had a top molar break in half less than a week after a 'Your teeth are fine but I'll give them a scale and polish (So I can make some money off you)' check-up at my dentist, when I went back he said they do break for no apparent reason and for me not to chew so hard on food, I was eating soggy cornflakes when it broke.

Up until I was 25 I''d never needed a filling or anything, but one day I was chewing away and I just lost one whole side of a back tooth, it literally split in two! There was no pain at all, but I was pretty shocked and was booked straight into the dentist. Must be a weakness or hair line crack and then eventually it just goes.

Had my teeth checked last month, cleaned and polished. Dentist said, 'See you in 6 months'. Yesterday evening front tooth cracked vertically almost top to bottom and will need a crown fitted next week. No pain but uncomfortable.

I asked the receptionist why this may have happened when I phoned for appointment and was told it often can with national health care rather than private care simply because the fee doesn't cover preventive maintenance. More a case of will fix when its gone wrong. I'm not sure if this is correct but this last few years since not paying for dental treatment I do seem to have less work done at checkups and problems do seem to be left rather late before they take any action. :(

Always remember as a kid chewing a toffee and blood started running down my mouth removed the toffee and my two front teeth stuck in the toffee perfectly upright

im afraid as much as i didnt want to laugh or comment ... thats more like a comedy sketch or something :(

yes im ashamed

Worse thing you can do to your teeth is eat/drink freezing cold stuff either after hot food or on really hot days. The temperature difference causes hairline cracks and shock to the enamel. Fizzy drinks / carbonation then work their way into the cracks and make the problem even worse.

I also had a friend who lost most of his teeth before 25. The dentist said that his enamel was almost like chalk and hadn't formed properly when he was a kid. Either due to lack of calcium or just genetics (as his dad was the same) - He now has full dentures & speaks a bit funny.
