Sometimes my ext hdd wont show up. any ideas why?

I have a ext 1tb western digital hdd.

when plugged in sometimes it will show up and sometimes it wont.

it is formatted and works fine as i have put data on it

It has one mains adaptor and one usb lead

when it gets plugged in it makes that hdd noise but nothing shows up

any ideas
