Somnium VR1 (PC VR)

are you saying there's no strap or any audio ?

if that's £1900, your looking at 2280 without the extras !

Yeah, this is just the front part of the headset.

It's not perfect either. They've had all the youtubers in to review it this week, and it has some issues.

That said, FOV is 120+ horizontal which is nice but then everything else is pretty much the same as the crystal. I was hoping it would be a lot cheaper, and also a lot more comfortable. Due to the dual lens design it sticks out a lot.

Honestly thinking about sticking with my pico 3 link.

So same weight as Crystal, same screens as Crystal, larger FOV but same resolution as Crystal yet they claim it's the same 35PPD - which is impossible since the larger FOV so it's more like 30-32PPD, same chromatic aberration as Crystal, more expensive than a Crystal. This thing is dead.
I wish they showed the fpsVR screen with the default resolution the lenses have to run at to mitigate the CA/warping.

Yeah, I'm well annoyed. I would have gone for it at around £1,500inc VAT! but not when it's going to sail well past £2k.

Plus I don't get to spend that much time simracing anyway, and when I do I still have a great time.

Artur did say ages ago resolution was 4436x4158

My little spec sheet

Triple 1440p = 11.05m
G2/Pico4 2160x2160 (3120x3120)x2 = 19.46m
Triple 4K = 24.88m
*Pico3 200% (3664x3840)x2 = 28.13m
Varjo Aero (4148x3556)x2 = 29.50m *(+5%)
Somnium VR1 2880x2880 (4436x4158)x2 = 36.88m *(+31%)
Crystal 2880x2800 (4312x5100)x2 = 43.98m *(+56%)

nice one. didn't know that.
Yeah, once you start factoring in eye tracking etc this thing is going to go reach a price where people just might as well just go Apple and XR4

Just a little thing for your list. Even though the Aero and Crystal are similar res running 100%. The Aero needs to run at the same resolution as the Crystal to reach the same clarity (which is 39PPD on the Varjo Base) but the Crystal runs better at that resolution by about 20%. Basically Varjo drivers are naff.

@wickfut Interesting the aero has a really good horizontal fov. Maybe it's great for simracing then.

Think I should have maybe got one during black friday.

Keep looking at the crystal as well, they seem to always have a sale on.

I watched the early review vids this week. Seems to be a good way away from production and consumer sales.
At the anticipated price point, looks like a tough sell.

This is interesting as all the extra vfov of the pimax over the aero is below the horizon - same with the index. So for dogfighting it does not make any difference
Yeah, only way I can describe it is it's like putting a finger moustache under your nose so you can't see the floor near your feet.

If Pimax fixed the IPD and lens focus thing (the eye comfort never felt natural and gave me severe eye strain when looking at distant objects like cars on the track and mountains in Skyrim) and made the strap fit better (it clamps forehead and rear of head with no side support so it rocks) I'd buy it again. Until they do I wouldn't go near it.
But other people enjoy it so maybe I'm just a mutant?

I mentioned on some Somnium discord that I found it odd that something as important as the headset lenses would be left until the last minute to fix. The CEO jumped in quite defensive saying his lenses are fantastic and that's how he does things.
I don't think the little paid outing for the youtubers went the way he'd planned. Probably thought they'd all gush over it and they didn't.

The size of it looks awful for weight distribution. I can't speak for lenses of course, but pancakes are so good for reducing the size and improving comfort, it's tough to imagine a reasonable tradeoff for that size. The only issue would be brightness, HDR does make things look pretty on a good TV.

Have to assume there's people working on more all encompassing lenses, to get full field of view. Wonder if we'll need to move away from pancakes for that?

I said to him months ago they needed to work on a headstrap with proper weight distribution. Why do these manufacturers get it wrong time after time?

It's such a simple thing to do, and makes the world of difference.

That said, there's no way the VR1 will be comfortable. It's just too big, too heavy and sticks out too much.

I was reading this morning that it's highly likely the next apple headset (2027?) will use the new type of OLED screens from Samsung. They are supposed to be way brighter.

Hypervision said that the new gen2 pancake lenses should be able to give a 140 horizontal FOV.

Future looks pretty good :D

Got to admit, right now I'm at a point where the FOV is close to something I'm happy with, a little more depth would be nice (as in looking down over ledges). I feel like from there, it's either all encompassing or not really worth small steps up.

OLEDs that work with pancake would be lovely though!
