Sonata II Noisy Psu

Hi folks,

My Sonata II case has developed a high pitched whining sound - I think from the PSU (hear it even when PC is off and PSU left switched on at rear). Don't know if its an 'about to die' noise. It's not really annoying yet but constant. :(

Presume theres nothing to be done about it other than change the PSU. Anyone know how the warranty works on these/duration of warranty? Also, is it worth getting it warranty swapped or put another/better PSU in? If so any ideas on a good replacement that won't need special cables etc? Mobo is an Asus A8N-e.

My usage is mostly gaming, but don't overclock and tend not to have the real latest graphics etc .

Cheers.

Definitely contact Antec, as their customer service is well known as among the very best in the business and I think they have a 3-year warranty on everything they make.

Even if you end up buying another PSU you'll almost certainly get one back that you can sell or keep as a spare.

to be honest i've been telling people so for a month or so now (ever since i joined the forums) that the PSU's that come with the Sonata II are rubbish, there have been so many problems on the internet, i'm just annoyed that i cant RMA mine as i lost the proof of purchase and contacting overclockers, which is where i believe i bought the case from has yielded no joy in terms of sending me an invoicy thing.

hope you still got yours, least the RMA service for antec itself is quality, needs to be with such terrible PSU's

edit: oh, and i wouldn't worry about it dying anytime soon, my sonata PSU is still going 6 months after developing the fault

You don't need proof of purchase - they can tell the build dates from the serial numbers. Try it. You might well be pleasantly surprised. Antec are not always the best when it comes to creating a problem, but they are among the very best at putting it right after they've cocked it up.

hmmmm...my pc keeps restartin with blue screens say windows has error please re-install all recent hardware etc. etc., could this be anything as its a new pc or u reckon its got anything to do with my sonata PSU?

i tried RMA ing it already, they basically said if i had proof of puchase to email it to them and they would give me an RMA number...no proof, no number, so no new psu

Sorry - this is with Antec or OcUK?

antec, overclockers just ignored the e-note

but i'm not to bothered now, i avoid antec stuff, and still order from OcUK, so no worries ;) just the psu gets annoying occasionally

That's completely the opposite attitude I received. I sent them an e-mail and the bits arrived in a couple of weeks. Admittedly, the item I was trying to get fixed was a newly launched product, but they did not ask for proof of purchase.

no need to stay away from antec products mate, there quality stuff.

I disagree. The reason their Customer Services are so good is that they have plenty of practise. Their design aspirations are good, but the execution is too compromised by the need to hit a certain price point. Warped doors, snapping hinges, cheap plastics are indications of designers having to work to too tight a budget. Lots of people have issues with Antec's quality, but they usually stand behind the product and make it right without any quibbles so people come away from the transaction feeling good about it. But I think they would do just as well to charge a few quid extra and get it right first time.
