Hi guys,

Im getting my mum a sonos for christmas but the router is in an awful location.

I just want to know if its possible to config the sonos using ethernet then move it to a separate location and it still connect using the wifi?

Anyone have a similar setup to this at home?

Probably a good idea to set it up on the wireless when it's in the same room as it. Then move to to another room to test.

They do also have the Sonos Bridge, which makes it's own wifi network. Can help for some people.

They are cheap on ebay; previously you had to use the Bridge for wireless use. Since they now allow direct wireless to the router, the Bridge is now pointless for most people.

The setup doesn't require to be wired at all.

Just turn it on and go through the steps in the app. One of the first things it will ask you to do is connect to the WiFi hotspot that the Sonos Play:1 itself creates.

You're then connected directly to it and tell it the WiFi to connect to and the password.

It's a becoming a fairly standard way to set up new WiFi devices.

Without trying to complicate things for you (as I don't think this will be important or necessary) with the regards to the bridge that Bledd mentions, you can actually use the Play:1 (or any other Sonos device) as the bridge by setting them up on WiFi then plugging a single device into Ethernet. All your Sonos devices will automatically change over to use the builtin Sonos mesh rather than your WiFi. Again, handy if you buy more but find WiFi signal lacking in certain parts of the house (just remember to only plug one of the devices into Ethernet!)
