Hi all,

Hoping some of you can share your thoughts on Sonos. I know it is highly rated but I would like real world opinions please.

We move home in 2 weeks and swmbo has asked for music in the lounge, kitchen and bedroom. Having looked, the Play:3 devices are perfect for our needs.
We have no amp / speakers, etc... so am I correct in thinking we would require 1 x bridge and 3 x Play:3 and away I go or do I need a connect also?

Actually, I don't think you even need a bridge, sonos just requires that one item is plugged in via Ethernet, it doesn't have to be a bridge, it could just be one of your play 3s. Also I would recommend trying play 1s setup in a stereo pair for a larger room like a lounge, a bit more money than a single play 3 but the stereo separation is worth it.
 
I have several. They are brilliant.

No need for bridge if you are putting one of the players next to the router. I'd get one anyway though, save you losing the portability of one. No need for a connect. Only need that if your plugging into existing hifi equipment that you want to use.

Also seriously consider the play:1 for some rooms, esp the bedroom. It's an amazing little speaker and nicer looking than the play:3.

It your lounge is big, consider stereo pairing play:3/5. I wouldn't bother with play:1 in the lounge...unless it's a small house.

I have stereo 2xplay:5 in lounge, play:3 in my study and play:1s in bedroom and kitchen.

As for whether it's as good as they say? Yes. Better. The speakers are very good, perhaps not as good as bose speakers, but their equivalent offering is poor in features. And more money.

I don't have a NAS, but put all my music on a 64gb usb stick and shoved it in my raspberry pi and shared it. Streaming from the phone is great, but has its obvious limitations.

Ge tthe bridge anyway, you rarely want to place a Play device close to your router or run a cable to it and for the price it;s a no-brainer.

The Play:3 will be fine but consider the Play:1 also if it lets you budget in another room. I didn't think the sound was that different between the two, albeit that was in a shop. (I have 2 x Play:5, a bridge and a Connect)

Again if you can stretch the budget, it's worth considering the hall. I'm going to get one or two Play:1 for mine as having a "hole" in the music when you're wandering around the house or having a party is a little annoying :)

Has anyone got any experience of the playbar? thinking about putting that into a sonos setup in my new house. Heard it on the go in Selfridges a few weeks back and it sounded brilliant.
 
No. Supposedly very good. But only 5.1 no DTS and only one optical in. So limited if you got loads of stuff you want through it...sky/bluray/ps4 etc.
 
One thing I've never quite understood is how Sonos stuff accesses your music. Do you need to have a PC running server software, do you plug in an external drive or what?

What would I need if I just wanted to play music wirelessly through an existing amp?
 
Use a NAS, or play music straight from your ios or android device.

If you want to use your existing amp, buy the connect.

I have one, I'm not an audiophile by any means but I think for a soundbar it does sounds brilliant. I'm sure it's no where as good as a mid/top end surround system but as soundbars go it's damn good. Plus it's so easy to set up and syncs with your other sonos components to give music throughout the house which no others do. Planning on getting a pair of 1's for some rears later on.
 
If you buying multiple devices at the same time lean on the retailer to throw in a bridge which they should be more than happy to.
 
richersounds doing a big promo on sonos stuff throwing in loads of freebies, not sure how good the offers are...etc but got it through via email on monday
