Sonos

I use it and absolutely love it. I have 5 zones now in my bathroom, kitchen, two bedrooms and lounge all Play 5s 3s connect 90 or connect 120.

I have a nas with my flac rips and Spotify. I also have my lounge sound hooked up to it so can continue listening to sky sports whilst in the toilet.

I think its amazing. The controller apps are great and it works brilliantly. Cant recommend it enough.

It's very good but only worthwhile if you have more than 1 zone otherwise it's vastly overpriced for its functionality. It's an especially good choice for people who have zero technical knowledge as it's pretty much plug in and go.

I've not encountered a solution that is anything like as simple and straightforward to setup and use, this really is how technology should work. The quality of the products is also surprisingly high I've always been impressed with not only the sound quality but also the build and style.

@rafster - I am thinking of adding a zone for my bathroom. How do you run this one? Is you unit actually in the bathroom with a power socket or do you just run speaker cable in there for ceiling speakers?

I have a cupboard next door, when I renovated I wired in speaker cables flush into the walls from the cupboard (terminated with a banana socket face plate) into the bathroom in the ceiling. I then have a Sonos Connect:AMP (or ZP120 as I know it as!) plugged in there to power and the faceplate

I have Kef ceiling speakers in there.

In the lounge I also have the Sky phono outs running to the Sonos zone in there, so that allows you to keep playing sound in the toilet. Usually do this when I have friends round to watch footie etc, never ceases to amaze them!

It's also great when you are in bath/shower to listen to radio etc

They are quite small speakers, so the bass isn't really great but good enough for what I use them for.

To control it, can it be done via HTTP? Or is it the Sonos app/program only?

Contemplating getting two of them, but being able to control it from Android / Surface RT and any Windows 7 laptop is a must for me.

A slick system, yes, but depends on your budget and priorities, there are better sounding options around if that should be your want.

Sonos owners, do you use it in conjunction with say iTunes or Media Monkey or just with the Sonos App?

About to move and new toys are on the list!

Android and Windows 7 have very slick, regularly updated Sonos apps.

You map the Sonos Windows/Mac app to the path of your library and as you update it with downloads/purchases/rips Sonos does regular refreshes of your library so you see new tracks.

An app called Media Rover can enhance this scanning for you and accelerate it to instant update.

So for someone dumb like me when it comes to this sort of thing, how does it work?

For instance, I have an iPhone and Macbook with my music on as well as some stuff sat on a NAS. My wife also has an iPhone and laptop with music on.

So how would Sonos work with/handle that variety of sources?

Is it as above, piece of software running on each type of device pointed to the location of the music on that device?

Sonos app mapped to multiple paths for multiple libraries then you see everything.

Alternatively Media Rover could take the technical bit out of your hands.

I'm fine with technical, it's just the case of never looking into this sort of thing before.

But the more we seem to be using various sources of media I'm thinking it might be a good idea to get some sort of central unit that can play music from multiple sources.

Well Sonos devices have line inputs too. Anything connected to a line input can be played anywhere/everywhere. There's also an iPod dock accessory that streams wirelessly and also gives you control of the iPod via any smart phone/tablet/PC/Mac/Sonos Controller.

When I'm installing Sonos for clients I use the line inputs for stuff like the TV audio (Freeview/Sky) and a local CD player if required. But TBH, once all the music is stored centrally there's very little requirement for much more than a dock and Freeview/Sky audio, and on rare occasions a CD player. Do you need anything more than that?
