OK it looks like my sons machine has gone spaff. it is BSOD..ing all over the place, it is probably the memory Ive set it up to run memtest86 to check.

Anyway my son has said if it need replacing/upgrading he is willing to pay for it if it isn't going to be too expensive.

His currant system is
Gigabyte P31 DS3L
Intel 6300 @3.6 GHz
4GB DDR2 (2x2GB)
2x WD 2500AAKS HDD not in raid
NV 260GTX

If it is just the ram then it is £50 to replace it, but is upgrading the old machine worth it or would a newer build be better.

Now I was thinking about a i3 3220 with 8GB ddr3 and a MSI H61M-P31-G3 Intel H61 or a Gigabyte H61MA-D2V Intel H61.
But maybe an AMD system would be better.

Now in the 2 reviews of the MSi board one of the people states that it will run a ivybridge chip but i have no idea about the GB board, I do not have another socket 1155 CPU to use to flash the bios.

So two questions is the i3 the best option? and will it be a decent step up from his [email protected] ?

budget is as cheap as possible (£180)

cheers.

£50 is way too much for out-dated RAM as you can pick up 8GB DDR3 for around £35. I would definitely go down the i3 3220 route as it's a nice budget upgrade but will be worth it in terms of performance :)

Both motherboards will support the i3.

OK so after checking the ram one of the sticks is indeed faulty, so my son has given the go ahead for the upgrade.
At the moment I'm looking at these components, picked this boards as it allows an upgrade to a unlocked quad K series chip at a latter date and of course the memory is on offer. :)

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i3-3220 3.30GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £89.99
1 x Kingston HyperX Genesis Grey 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-15000C11 1866MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX1866C11D3P1K2/8G) £35.99
1 x **B Grade** Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 Intel Z68 (Socket 1155) DDR3 (MB-364-GI) £35.00
Total : £160.98 (includes shipping : FREE).

Looks good.

That motherboard may be missing some of the accessories, IO shield, SATA cables ect.

Depending on what BIOS it comes with it may not work with the Ivybridge chip. ( it will need flashing to a more up to date BIOS)

Well according to the Gigabyte website that board has supported ivybridge CPU's since 21/3/2012, so I reckon its a fairly safe bet.

B Grade equipment misses a lot of stuff (Depends on what u get though) and it may of been sat in a warehouse for a long time. Theres no saying for sure what BIOS it will have on and if it will support IB

Not connected with the question, but how do you add the shoping cart details in your forum reply? I have seen it quite often but have no idea how to make it.

DDR 2 ram for 50 pound ?? You must be able to get it cheaper

Don't think you would need anymore then 4 though if your not video rendering or anything like that

Yeah I think it's not stocked in many places so prices are high.

But second-hand indeed you can pick it up for cheap.

Although an upgrade of cpu/mobo/ram would be better anyway.

You are suggesting a z77 board, why? the z68 board will do everything the z77 will do. What will a z77 board do that a z68 board wont do? bear in mind that his GPU is a gtx260 and it wont be replaced for a year at least. the z68 is only £35 as well not the £60 the z77 costs.

Well the memory that is about to finish as the today only deal has been ordered, and if the new today only deal is a better offer i can always phone them up to amend it. :)
