Entertainment giant Sony has apologised to the Church of England for using Manchester cathedral as a backdrop to one of its violent computer games.

Senior Anglicans demanded "Resistance: Fall of Man" was withdrawn from sale as a battle is shown inside the building.

In a statement, Sony said the company "sincerely apologised" for causing any offence, but added it believed it "had sought all necessary permissions".

The Dean of the Cathedral, the Very Reverend Rogers Govender, thanked Sony.

He said in a statement: "We acknowledge the admission by Sony that the building in the game is Manchester Cathedral.

'Science fiction'

"We thank Sony for the apology they have made.

"However, we do not move from the position that we are against violence and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the Cathedral."

The letter from Sony said: "We do not accept that there is any connection between contemporary issues of 21st Century Manchester and a work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens.

"It is not our intention to cause offence by using a representation of Manchester Cathedral in chapter eight of the work. If we have done so we sincerely apologise."

Sony has not yet commented on the church's plea for the game to be removed from shop shelves.

I'd be interested to see if sales of R:FoM went through the roof when this debacle first started in case it was removed from store shelves.

Don't own the game, or even a PS3, but I will be pretty damn angry if Sony cave in.

They wont cave. There is now way they will remove from shelves the biggest selling ps3 title to date (I am assuming it is or Motorstorm).

How come it has taken the church of england this long to notice? The game has been out in usa and japan since last november, and out here since march.

Is it any wonder church attendences in this country are down. The only time they are in the news is when priests have been up to funny business and crap like the above story!!

It'll never get taken off the shelves as technically they have not done anything illegal. The church did not want to take it to court (as they know they stand little chance of winning), and are after a nice hefty donation from Sony.

It's up to Sony whether they decide if its a good PR move or not.

I think if things go to court it will be laughed out as there is nothing illegal that Sony have done, and the Church know it, it seems like there going for the moral high ground now. The thing is where does it end? Surely some movies and other games have used violence in church's/holy buildings, if resistance gets taken off the shelf for this then shouldn't they? Will that mean games wont ever be able to use a public place in a game in case someone claims that it may affect the local community like the Church have mentioned the gun crime in manchester?

Did that not also happen with manhunt and the Getaway with the BT van mission?

No publicity is bad publicity.

It's a load of old tosh. I remember a doctor who episode last series set in a church and there wasn't anything said. Double standards and any excuse for the 'la de da, we think we're so bloody superior' moral minority to take a swipe at video gaming.

Or the church scene in The Omen, which shows Damien about to be stabbed and the policeman shooting the dad.

What's the difference with a computer game?

Isn't there some gun violence in churches in the movie the DaVinci Code iirc? Yet nothing was said. Just a lets pick on what is popular and find even more ways to alienate young people from churches tbh.

I hope the church doesn't end up getting the game altered and getting compensation but I have a feeling they will  I'm sure Sony would just like to tell them to STFU as we all would, but they have to be nice to try and avert a lawsuit or at least minimise the cost.

It could be that that movie was made in the 70s which was far less PC than nowadays.

I think the issue is whether Sony had permission to use the internals of the church. And also in all these other examples was the church used recognisable?

In an indiana jones film he bashes a hole in the floor of a church A HOLE IN THE FLOOR I TELL YOU

The church is a joke. They have been the insigators of so much violence throughout history which they obviously seem to have selective amnesia about.

Its a game, not terrorist cell we're talking about.

Hypocrisy knows no bounds.

Ok who fancies driving up to manchester having a shootout in this church then suing sony becasue their evil videogame warped our minds. I'm free after 5pm.
