Sony developing hack-proof PlayStation 3? (£186)

If it's a different master key, how is it supposed to run the existing games that are already out?

Anyone who understands what the hacks actually did knows this 'hackproof' console is virtually impossible.

So it's just another Slim like mine but with better security. I guess I don't need to rush out and buy one when they come out then. It's good they're working on cleaning out the trash though as in people modding there PS3s software. I hate it when people ruin things for others.

Ok, so what about the existing install base? I have no intention of getting rid of my 60gb but how secure is it going to be in the near future? Are Sony not going to bother trying to fix the security loophole with the older consoles from now on? Does this mean they've given up and our older machines will be wide open to hackers if/when Sony stop bothering to update the security via patches on our older machines?

I assumed that "Hack Proof" was referring to the new wave of USB devices that enable you to run homebrew programs and pirated games, and not someone breaking into your PS3.

So far Sony have been doing really well to keep pirates at bay, but it's like holding back the tide. You can't beat nerds.

Even if I COULD pirate PS3 games I wouldn't. Firstly there's that whole "ethical" thing, but Killzone 3 was recently released on torrent sites and it was a 40Gb download! I'd probably complete the game twice in the time it would take to download that from a torrent site.

*EDIT*: I re-read your post and now see you meant EXACTLY what I meant. I've left it there so you can laugh at me.

I call BS on that article, it makes no sense. They'd simply be flooding the market with more second-hand 'hackable' consoles, and the people who want to hack their consoles aren't going to upgrade anyway.

I don't doubt that Sony are working on new hardware revisions that might be hack-proof, but there's going to be no "incentive to upgrade" when/if it does appear.

I don't see the big deal on the price. I bought my fat 40gb PS3 new 2 years ago for £200. Recently I saw the 250gb slim being sold new for £159 (and the 120gb, £149) Today I could buy a 160gb slim for £191 and that's without looking.

No, you were originally right mate, I was worried about someone remotely breaking into my Ps3 while I'm online. I'm not bothered about offline security as I don't intend to modify my machine and I despise piracy.

40Gb from a decent torrent site or newsgroup is only like 6 hours on a 20mb connection and that's pretty slow nowadays.Having said that you probably could complete it at least once, it's only a 4 hour or so single player campaign. Sigh.

I don't have my PS3 modded though, cba. No such thing as hack proof mind.

Im in Thailand at the moment with work. I was at one of the IT centres I used to visit a lot when I lived here and they are selling copied PS3 games in every shop. I was pretty annoyed when they offered me f all for my PS3 games in p/x because no one is buying them since the PS3 got hacked. I got offered Killzone 3 for £5, plus an extra £10 for the USB device. Didnt take it as Im not into pirating games.

the moment a company says there hack proof or unhackable they become a massive target and so far every one that has stated it, has ultimately had there product hacked.

-Whats the point. If someone wants to hack the ps3 they just wouldn't buy one of these (or am I missing something?).
Surely they'd be better off selling them and not saying anything about the unhackable side.

It would spread very quickly about the unhackableness of it very quickly

It will be 3.56 out of the box i.e. hackproof

Exactlly , FW 3.56 is hack proof at present, it uses a random number instead of the fixed one they used before. All previous Software works as Sony has a whitelist of games that used earlier keys, so only when they match those on the list will they work. I expect future games will need part of the next FW to run correctly and wont work without the latest firmware. So in reality all Sony need to do now is make sure all PS3s from now are at 3.56 and above, at present it looks secure and the fact the ban hammer is prepared it may not be as simple as it was.

If this is indeed true then it puts a bit of a dampener on the comments of the armchair security experts who said in the other thread that a hardware revision was impossible due to it not being compatible with all the existing games.
