Certainly looks the part. When is the expo (find out the specs)?

To answer my own question:

The Xperia arc is stunningly thin and as the name suggests has a concave back. It is believed to be armed with a 1GHz Qualcomm single-core processor (previous reports talked of a 800MHz CPU), a 4.2-inch (854 x 480) multitouch display with protected mineral glass, Android Gingerbread, an 8 megapixel Exmor R camera sensor with HD video capture and a chassis that measures just 8.7mm at the thinnest point and weighing just 117g. It will also come with a 1500mAh battery and a 16GB microSD memory card. Check out the promo video after the break.

Not sure I would get one for 0.2" more, HDMI and better looks, especially if Gingerbread can be ported to the X10.

CES 2011 opens its doors tomorrow. So we can expect all sort of updates. SE are due to announce 4 / 5 new handsets hopefully.

But would you buy another Sony Ericsson phone?

A single real update on a phone is ridiculous, Yes we have had bug fixes, for bugs that should not have been there in the first place. And its all gone quite for any more updates.

I for one will not be, so that's Samsung and Sony Ericsson off my buying list.

Yes. SE have also said the next update is due Q1 2011. I believe they have learn lessons from the X10. Hopefully we start to see the company being a bit more forth coming with information like they have been lately.

However, I also like the look of a few new phones that are to be announced at CES. The main points for me are a good camera, media playback and a good screen for looking at stuff on the web.

Either of you 2 able to figure why we cant get the minor update from either seus or pccompanion?

This is a bit strange. Mines on the Generic Global firmware which had the update available by PC Companion.

Just to double check your "kit code" is : 1227-4612 / 1225-9897_R8B

i would

we knew it had 1.6 when we bought it and i had no issues with 1.6 myself anyway

it looked good , had a great camera , had great sound quality and was cheaper than competitors . thats what i wanted and thats what i got.

customer service has been pretty great when i have had handsets replaced too

This sort of BS really puts me off buying another SE... (I really miss 2.2 on the Defy :()

What's the real reason they're not updating to 2.2? Can't be hardware can it? Or is it just too time consuming/costly with that extra UI stuff to add?

Also the next tweet

@KamSamji We believe the version of Android 2.1 which we have implemented on the X10 is suitable for the hardware of these particular models

In other words 0% chance of another update.

They did already say we will get another version of 2.1, but we prob won't see 2.2. It would step on the newer Xperia's imporvement list.

Nothing wrong with the hardware, its pretty good considering.

Agreed.

The hardware is fine apart from the usb, which has caused a lot of problems for a lot of people. The software/support is why i will never buy another Sony Ericsson product again.

Considering how long it took SE to get 2.1 running on the X10, not surprised. Something like 8 months and 170 changes! UXP, IMO, on the X10 is a bit of a flop. It is slow (stock SE UXP quadrant score of 400-500 compared to over 1,500 for stock Android 2.1), I don't think barely anyone uses Timescape and doesn't offer much benefits over stock Android or another skin on top of Android (e.g. Sense UI).

However getting rid of the SE bloatware, installing JIT and some other tweaks have made this phone a dream to use - what it really should have been when launched. Once stock Android 2.1 and 2.2 (possibly 2.3) get fully ported, this phone will be exceptional! I think SE have learnt from their mistakes - don't forget it was their first Android device and I am sure HTC and others also had some teething problems with their first devices.

The only way I would consider them as 'schooled' is when they publicly open up the bootloader.
Until that point, they have not changed....

The ASOP ROMs are still buggy but the custom official ROM I mentioned on the previous page is quite nice (more of a theme ROM). It adds a reboot function to the long press power button menu, a nice boot screen and custom notification bar etc.

Is this a decent phone then? Looking to see what I can get (contract up for renewal).

Have you used an Android phone? It is a decent phone now (if you like tweaking - get rid of the bloatware and install JIT which improves performance a fair bit), the only gripe some may have with it is the lack of multi touch - though a dual/multi touch update is due early this year.
