Is this a decent phone then? Looking to see what I can get (contract up for renewal).

I wouldn't buy one now as the next gen are on the horizon. Hold out and wait for this next batch of Android phones, read reviews on them and get the one which appeals to you most. You don't want to get stuck in a 1-2yr contract with a previous gen phone.

Hands-on preview of the phone. Looks fast and sexy! Though I remember thinking the same with the X10 before release. Could this be the best year for phones yet? I think so!

The Nokia 7650 has a 32-bit RISC CPU, based on ARM-9 series, a 104 MHz CPU clock, 4 MB of non-expandable main memory (RAM) (3.6 MB available to the user) and 16 MB ROM.
:D

Yeah I think it was the first Nokia with Symbian. I know, it was a great OS in its days - apps and multitaksing came way before the 'iPhone' generation thanks to Symbian. It made me stick with Nokia for a very long time (7650, 6600 which got stolen in an exam, 7610, N73 and N82) - though my love for Nokia started to strain after getting the N73. Symbian could not keep up with the times especially on the UI front. Nonetheless a great OS in its day.

Yeah, Symbian (UIQ) is what drew me to Sony and why I stayed with them, P800, P900 (flashed it to P910), P990, then W960... X10 felt pretty poor in comparison till I customised it.

Been a nice phone, but its time to let it go before it value drops to zero.
Having more fun with my OSF atm, so will hold out for a next gen.

really hoped the bootloader would have been cracked by now :(

Not that I appreciate the work of the people at XDA but I swear they have been saying "almost there" for months now! :p

News:

We know that 2.2 won't be coming to the X10 via SE though comment above did make me laugh ("a user experience that is on par with, and in many cases better than, a vanilla installation of Android 2.2"). No flash, performance almost 4 times slower (in benchmarks) than vanilla 2.2, APPS2SD out of the box, WiFi tethering out the box etc. The arrogance of their tweet annoys me. We all knew we would be getting a 1.6 phone but if I had known it would take up to a year to get 2.1, MT (despite their constant denials), UXP update, DNLA; coupled with the more than obvious delay and splitting of 2.1 - I probably wouldn't have got it. Fortunately post 2.1 and the great work over at XDA, all of my many problems have gone apart from the faulty battery. It is like a brand new phone! Rant over :p, I guess they want to focus on the road ahead and the new handsets including the Arc! On a more positive note.....

Sony Ericsson has announced that several existing Android phones including the X10 mini, X10 mini pro and X8 will support the ANT+ communication standard by the end Q1 2011. This will enable the phones to connect to a wide range of fitness and medical sensors including heart rate monitors and pedometers.

"We’re planning another upgrade to bring new features (such as for example multi-touch for Xperia X10) to the current family of Xperia™ smartphones in Q1 2011."

I assume the only definition of MT is something that is more than dual touch?

A new firmware update was yesterday certified by the PTCRB. Firmware version 2.1.A.0.390 hasn’t hit handsets yet, but a quick look at the open source code released by the SE Developer site highlights that this firmware may be bringing us the multitouch fix for the Xperia X10 family. We’ll bring you more news as we have it.

Zdzihu from xda-developers has released a new custom Android 2.2 (Froyo) ROM for the Xperia X10. The release is timely considering that Sony Ericsson yesterday officially confirmed that the X10 family will not see an Android revision beyond Android 2.1 (Éclair).

The ROM is currently in Beta and can be installed through xRecovery. A hot fix has already been released that addresses wi-fi DNS and ringtone loop issues. The first beta release of the FreeX10 Froyo 2.2 custom ROM can be downloaded here.

This is what I am looking forward to the most! Everything seems to have gone quiet regarding the second half of the 2.1 update?

Zdzihu from xda-developers continues to make great progress on the Custom Android 2.2 (Froyo) ROM for the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10. In the latest hotfix, he has now included native APP2SD functionality, which enables you to move your apps to your memory card.

However, it’s worth remembering this is still a beta release and there are still plenty of bugs that are being worked on.

Damage limitation from their arsey 2.2 comment continues:

Sony Ericsson has openly admitted that their first foray into Android was not up to scratch. Steve Walker, global head of marketing for Sony Ericsson, said that “the first generation of handsets in our portfolio was about getting the capability out there,” whilst speaking to Pocket-Lint.

He went on to say that when they started designing the handsets back in 2010, nobody really knew how the smartphone market would grow and what would be important for customers. “It’s important to remember that 2010 was the first year for mass market Android handsets. Yes there had been one or two things out from HTC previously, but when we started to design our 2010 handsets in 2008, nobody really knew the dynamics of the Android smartphone market or even what the smartphone market was going to be,” said Walker.

He also went on to say that releasing the Xperia X10 and X10 mini handsets was a huge learning curve for the company, but the company is now much stronger for it. “If we hadn’t done what we did with the X10 and the X10 minis we wouldn’t have been able to do what we’ve done here today,” said Walker. “Last year we didn’t anticipate the strength of feeling that consumers would have towards the Android release. And again that was a learning experience of the first year of mass market Android smartphones”.

Walker was understandably quite buoyant about the 2011 line up. “As we do every year, we’ve taken those learnings and applied them to the new products in the new portfolio. We do think we’ve taken a big step forward for 2011. What we think is different in 2011 is that consumer attention is swinging back to hardware once more. That’s not to say people aren’t focused on software, but that they are a little more in balance now.” Let’s just hope for the company’s sake that they really have learned from their mistakes, let’s also hope that the current Xperia range isn’t completely abandoned after the next multi-touch firmware update.

I appreciate their honesty.

You don't believe any of that bull do you?

They have said this old chestnut time and time again with phones, and never improved.

It's simply a marketing ploy, to make you think you will get updates if you buy their product, when you will not.

There is no reason on this earth why they can't put at least android 2.2 on this current range, The only reason they are not is pure greed.

A little, surely they must learn from the X10? I have never owned an SE phone before so don't know their track record other than they screwed up the X1 but that was also a first phone. Either way, I will not be buying another SE phone!

Because it took them 8 months (possibly even more) to get 2.1 on the X10, with over 170 changes I believe. The result - a better phone but so the software is so butchered (from a performance, in benchmark, standpoint) it was 3/4 times slower than stock 2.1. 2.2 sounds too much of a challenge for them!

I know they are slow with updates but how slow are we talking (for previous phones)? For instance, how did they manage with the X2? Seems an appropriate example as I guess it was their second run at a WinMob phone?

They could win back a lot of support by the simplest of gestures, open up the Bootloader.

Ok, ive given up trying to get that one update - so anything up and coming soon, also is there any guides or tips on removing some of the bloat stuff on here, like timescape - and maybe removing mediascape with additional apps to view pics, music, vids seperatly.

I wouldn't remove MS, I think it is heavily integrated with a lot of features. TS - burn it with fire :p, safe to remove. I use Titanium Backup to remove my unwanted apps.

I used this list:

rm /system/etc/customization/applications/Supernytt.apk
rm playnowback.apk
rm playnowclient.apk
rm moxiermail.apk
rm textinput-tng.apk
rm chinesetextinput.apk
rm Danish_keyboard.apk
rm LatinIME.apk
rm playnowappinstaller.apk
rm SEMCTouchPalKoreanQWERTY.apk
rm EManualLauncher.apk

rm PhoneBook.apk

Though I didn't remove the last two.

will never happen . ever

security is more important to them than anything else.

True :( - one of their strengths. Cracking it is proving very difficult, though if they get a day to day 2.2 Official ROM working well at XDA - that should do nicely!

Perhaps Sony will just use the same random key again like on the PS3. :D Nah, I doubt phone security works anything like a PS3's.
