Sony HT-G700

12.1 are standmounts? They should be ok for music in a small room but for action movies you'll want a sub. Adding a subwoofer diverts low bass from speakers, sends those frequencies to the sub which can handle it. This helps the amplifier for the speakers, decreases distortion, lessens the demand on the amp, decreases distortion to the speakers.

Bookshelf I believe, unless I've misunderstood somewhere? I'm kind of flicking between various shops sites at the moment and getting a little lost with it all.

What would the 12.1 be like compared to the 9.1 in that package? Cheers.

I've only owned the 9.0.

Yeah there's a lot of choice, quite overwhealming, different brands of AVRs, speakers, and subwoofers. Maybe have a demo of a few brands of speakers

I think I'm settled on the AVR now, being the Denon X1800H. Unless there's something terrible about it I don't know about. I'll do more research but all being well it seems the logic choice being the same price. I think it has advanced setup as well, MultEQ XT rings a bell although I read there's an even fancier XT32 - but this is becoming a case of whooosh for me! lol

I'll need to start researching the various speaker brands now so I can a short lift and see if Richer Sounds have any of them available to listen to.

Another twist; after discussion with the wife it would appear that floorstanding speakers are the preferred choice. I think starting with two decent fronts and going from there would be the best way forward?

I was also thinking if it were nice stands then maybe could be agreeable, but then I'm guessing that good stands will push the price up as well and I'd rather such money go into the actual speaker itself?

They will need to have front covers. I prefer the bare look, but the wife doesn't and drew parallels to a washing machine lol

Ive seen Evo 4.2 for £300. They'll be better quality speakers

I'd recommend better quality standmount over budget floorstanders.

I'm a little reluctant to get used speakers, I would worry about them being knackered. After watching some videos on the floorstanders and in particular the 12.3, they are deeper than I realised and I'm not sure if such a large footprint will work. So bookshelf speakers may have to be the way forward. Slowly getting there!

Thanks, that opens up some options then as I've decided to get a subwoofer and centre speaker as well, so should help keep budget creep to a minimum.

I'll have a look at those Evo 4.2 and take things from there.

Unfortunately, The Evo 4.2 are going to be too big, which is a pity as they look really good. Because the speakers are now having to go in the bay window either side of the TV (not ideal I know) the footprint will have to be smaller to keep the wife happy. Something more along the lines of the Diamond 12.1. This would also leave more room for a decent sub.

I really like the Monitor Audio Silver 50 (7G) and the footprint is lovely, but they would have to be a good used price as it's too much budget creep if new as I'll need stands.

They look nice, I did read a review that didn't favour them very much, needed to have high volume to get the most out of them, whereas I need the lower volume quality for films late at night.

I'm sure I read the Diamond 12.2 are good at low volume, or maybe that was the 12.3 floorstanding ones? Getting dizzy again! lol

I'm not really sure what would be the best way to know for sure without actually experiencing them? I've started compiling a list of the contenders as I've been getting lost with all the models etc. I've mainly been looking at official reviews, but it would be nice to get user feedback, so I think I'll look at posting a selection in AVF as they seem to have a large active crowd there and hopefully I can get varied feedback.

A few factors I'll presumably need to include will be room size, distance from TV, initial budget (in case centre or subwoofer is required) and size restraints to keep the wife happy!

Hopefully I can get down to a shortlist of three speakers and then see if I can get demos in store. Cheers for all the help, it's been a fast journey so far but I do feel like I'm miles ahead and in a better position from when I initially started.

Ah, I forgot to mention; there's been a development....

Finally reached a conclusion on the atheistic sides of things with the wife:

1. Floorstanding speakers only; unfortunately, this is non-negotiable.
2. Front has to be full black grill or at least all darkish. No split tone (i.e. half black grill on top and then walnut underneath because there's already a lot of wood around)
3. The units themselves can be all black or walnut. I think walnut suits our particular living room due to the age and style.

She's been decent about the TV size upgrade and also having additional speakers in the first place, so I have to compromise as well, it's only fair.

With plans to eventually create a 5.1 system, I'm also looking at what centres, rears etc are available with various brands. Dolby ATMOS will never happen, the ceiling is high, the plaster is 120 years old and it would not suit the room.

This is now my short list for front speakers:
  • DALI Oberon 5
  • Wharfedale Diamond 12.3
  • KEF Q550 (not sure about their flat centre speaker, my TV isn't wall mounted, but I think there's other options available)
I've not really looked into subwoofers yet, but that will be coming shortly afterwards.

For reference my living room is 21.5m² which includes a 3m² bay window area (where the TV resides and hopefully the speakers). Viewing distance to the TV is 3.2m. Ceiling is 3m heigh. The floor is suspended original wooden floorboards.

I'm leaning heavily towards the Oberon 5.

This is my worry with online reviews, feedback etc, there's always going to be someone who doesn't like any speaker and being so subjective I think I need to go an listen to a few for myself.

I did have the Q Acoustics 3050i on my list, but initially the split tone of the walnut version makes it a no go. However, the black version could be in the running. I'll put that down as a backup, just in case there's a problem with getting a demo of any of the others, or maybe I can include it as well. I'm not sure if 4 speakers is asking too much.

I'm guessing the volume will be the 21.5m² area x 3m height, so 64.5m³ ?

Had a listen to the Oberon 5 and the Bronze 200, the latter has a little more clarity but feels more clinical and I reckon I would get some fatigue. The Oberon 5's are warmer and nicer to listen to for me. Dialogue is clear and the bass is actually fine for me, although it was a much smaller room compared to my living room.

Try some Q Acoustic 3050i. They're more neutral sound

Cheers, but they didn't have any to demo. Ended up with the Oberon 5's. Everything now wired up etc and very happy. I'm already getting greedy for surrounds etc lol

Only annoyance is the handing of HDMI inputs. When plugged into the AVR my TV remote can't select them and I have to use the AVR remote, but then once selected I have to switch back to my TV remote to actually control the selected device.

Ended up just connecting all the most commonly used ones directly to the TV and using eARC to the AVR. The less frequent stuff can be plugged directly into the AVR.
