A nearby neighbour has been digging through his attic during the lockdown and has found a Sony PHV-A7E “Photo Video Camera” which appears to generate a video output from slides or 35mm negatives.

The manual mentions “connecting to a PC” but helpfully provides no further details on how to do this.

Has anyone ever used one of these and, if so, what cables and SW will I need to capture the output of this device as JPEGs on a Windows 10 PC?

It seems to essentially just be a camera which sends an analogue video signal out the back either via composite ( the red, yellow and white connectors ) or S-Video ( the black round connector (better quality)). Yes, there is colour correction, focussing options on it, but after all those, its still just a video-out.

It doesn't appear to offer any short of digitial snap-shot option, such as saving a jpg and then exporting that digitally out to a PC.

To get images into a PC, it looks like you'll need a capture device of some sort. Now you can get them in cheap USB devices all the way through to very expensive screen grabbers ... and capturing analogue is a whole rabbits warren to go down (time base correction etc). In short:- S-Video is normally better quality than the composite output. If its just something for the odd jpeg - try a USB device. If its going to be something your doing constantly, then you may get slightly better results from a card. I have an Avermedia CE310B PCIe card, and have found that to be rock-solid in capturing analogue.

Thanks for the info.

I have a very old TV with phono/composite video inputs up in the attic and will search my Big Box Of Obsolete Cables for some phono leads so I can at least check it still works before spending any money on capture devices.

Thanks again.

Thanks.

Having tried 3 different TVs via Scart, phono and S-Video cables, I’ve been unable to get anything but a very broken picture out of it.

After having had a good look at the box it came to me in, I suspect it’s got damp and been dropped at least once in the past.

Have suggested that my neighbour invest in a modern scanner with USB connectivity that saves scans directly to JPEGs on a PC.
