Sony Planning 80GB PS3

I am planning to release to myself a 250gig version of ps3, just got to go down the local computer shoppy and pick up the hard drive, slot the old one out and slot the new one in and hey presto

Coul you stick a raptor in there? I'm presuming you could, but would it greatly speed up transfer rates?

Can't see why people find this hard to believe. It is easily possible that a company the size of Sony would have enough buying power to make a deal with a hard drive manufacturer to get some 80GB drives for a cheaper price than 60GB drives they bought 6 months ago.

Apple did it with their 1st gen nano's I believe. They got a deal with Samsung to get 2gb (I think) chips really cheap, meaning they could offer the 2gb version at almost the same price as most other companies 1gb models.

If it saves them money per PS3 (this is a replacement for the 60GB version which is the one they sell most of) then they will do it. It just happens to also benefit the consumer.

Whilst it would be very annoying to existing PS3 60gb owners, it doesn't add any new features (ie HDMI on 360 Elite). It just increases the hard drive size. And changing the hard drive yourself on the PS3 is fairly painless by all accounts. As its 20GB difference only I can't see it affecting people that much when thinking of buying a PS3.

One thing that annoys me with the 360 elite announcement is that it is a permanent 3rd model which I think will confuse people in the long run (see number of Vista versions as an example). It sounds like the PS3 ill still have 2 models, it will just be the 20GB version and the 60GB version.

that is all.

I am not sure, the hard drive in the ps3 is a 2.5 laptop drive 5400rpm ( same spec as the 360 expect for capacity obviously ) so I am not sure if the extra access times and rotation speeds would have a negative effect, if you can stick a raptor in there that would be cool then it would be warp speed mr sulu

Nope it would be slower. The PS3 runs the 5400 discs the fastest, anything else is actually slower for some peculiar reason.

LOL... So it's OK to give people a 60Gb PS3 with HDMI and Wifi (and no EE chip), then introduce a little while later a 20Gb with no WiFi (as reported the cheap 20Gb version is coming to the UK), and the possibility of an 80Gb version...

But if MS add a new model, with just a larger HDD and one other connection method that's a bad thing..

Quote frankly considering how many variants of the PS3 are out in the field right now,
60Gb with PS2 hardware
60Gb without PS3 hardware
20Gb without Wifi but with PS2 Hardware
20Gb without Wifi and without PS3 Hardware

I can't see how confusing this is to customers.. a Euro gamer might go and read loads of PS3 info before buying, thinking all his PS2 games will work, then when he buys his Euro version realises that half his PS2 games don't work..
Or the guy who buys his 60Gb PS3 to just play games, and then a couple of months later a cheaper 20Gb model is launched that is cheaper and still suits his needs.. he'd be a bit gutted...

It amazes me how Sony fanboys have this weird way of thinking...

Weird, you seem to state the models without PS2 hardware like its a feature you have a choice in? In the territories that launched last week the machines have no emotion engine chip. In the other countries they do for now, but soon they will have the ones without emotion chips. That is it. You buy the one available in your country.

They sell 2 models

20gb version (no wifi & no card readers.)
60gb version

They may replace the 60gb one with a 80gb one that still leaves only 2 models.

I don't think that compares to the release of the Elite. As I stated it is a different strategy in that they now offer 3 models.

On a computers based forum I did not think it necessary to explain why replacing a model with a larger capacity hard drive is not the same as adding a model with a larger drive AND a new digital audio/video connection.

I don't know why you call me a fanboy, I stated that is is annoying for ps3 users for them to add this model. I don't like to be considered a fanboy as I have had a 360 since launch day and probably owned/rented/played many games for much longer than most people on this forum. I enjoy both the consoles.

that is all.

It would look a bit ugly with a 3.5" Drive hanging out of it's arse though, the biggest 2.5" SATA I can find is a 160GB. :p

If it gets Sony out of a tight financial spot then why not? They left the door open to do this by allowing users to upgrade to larger HDD's without invalidating the warranty.

Good on them for thinking ahead.

Totally OT, but your post count has gone up LOTS since last time I checked!

OT: I won some posts in a charity red nose auction thing in General Discussions section. I think I was just below 900 before and now I reckon 1000 of the posts are genuine posts. Can't remember exactly how many I won.

Edit: I think your gamerscore has surpassed mine since I last checked :p (touche!!)

Exaggeration was the name of the game chum :D
Actually I was wrong as Toshiba have bought out a 200GB 2.5" SATA HDD, but it's 4200rpm so it may slow the read speed down after all - over £100 though, so about the same price as a 360 120GB. You weren't far off though with 250.

And yes I know you were exaggerating hence the ':p' at the end of my post  :p
