Sony PS3 in 3D?

Saw this the other day, thought Id post it.

Quoted on GameSpot and hinted at on Crave. If these clues add up Sony could be onto something big.

Mitsubishi is currently planning to develop a ‘3D Blu-ray Player’. When presenting this demo they handed out ‘goofy 3d glasses’ and showed some new 3D-imaging technology the company has been working on. They say. . .

. . .the demo was run from a massive Dell desktop and output onto a large DLP set. In an effort to inject new life into the fading rear-projection category, the company’s pitch was that the 3D technology worked with existing DLP TVs and projectors (due to DLP’s native 120Hz refresh rate, which allows you to split it into 60/60 for 3D) but not with LCD and plasma displays.

After the live demo they went on and hinted that they would be integrating their new technology into one of the 3 major game consoles. Since the PS3 is the only one that supports Blu-ray what ever could they mean?

While Mitsubishi wasn’t ready to talk pricing, one would expect to pay a premium for a special-featured Blu-ray player. That said, Mitsubishi hinted that it was in discussions with one game console manufacturer to integrate its 3D technology into the system. The Wii’s not capable of such feats, and Microsoft’s in the HD DVD camp, so one would have to assume it’s Sony and the PS3.

We have just started to experience 1:1 motion detection(or as close as we can right now). And as far as ‘virtual reality’ goes. . .that really stops at the gigantic ‘fully immersed’ setup. This could be the thing that blows Nintendo and Microsoft completely out of the water. Then again it could just be a flop like Beta-Max, UMD, or Blu-ray(potentially). Either way you have to love how Sony is out there selling their new media as much as they can.

If this does work. . .do you think it would attract more casual gamers or more hardcore gamers?

and

Most of us were pretty impressed by the demo, which included clips from movies, commercials, and sporting events. There was real depth to the 3D, and you got that 3D-feeling of objects poking out at you from the screen. All the demo material had been shot in 3D, but the kicker to the whole presentation was that Mitsubishi apparently has a Blu-ray player in its labs that can convert existing 2D movies into 3D on the fly. Better yet, according to company representatives, it may be available early next year.

I'm pretty skeptical that the technology is going to show up anytime soon, and I have my doubts that converted 2D content is going to look all that great in 3D. But the 3D movement is gathering more momentum, as other companies such as Samsung and Philips continue working on ways to bring 3D into the home. Ideally, you wouldn't have to wear glasses (Philips is trying to integrate 3D right into the display), but I have a feeling you're only going to get a true Imax-like 3D experience with some eyewear.

Well its an interesting idea, cant see it being used at all really. Anyone remember the virtua boy? I guess if it works it would need software developers to take it on board, the idea of a BD palyer being able to convert a 2D BD to a 3D image is quite amazing, I guess it could do the same with a previously 2D game then ?

It doesn't work with Plasma or LCD but only with DLP and Projectors. Oh well that takes me off the list as a potential customer.

Yes because it's a massive chunk of the PS3's target audience that have/want a rear projection TV or projector

True but i can hardly see the point of it being used with 32" or less screen. The idea is quite cool, im not 100% sure that a HD DLP isnt much more than a good 40" screen, and playing a 3D game on a 6ft screen would be cool. Its only now that buying a HD tv is the norm when your old TV dies, so I dont think this will happen any time soon, the Avatar movie is being shot on Digital 3D though so it may happen in movies first.

Fail.

I thought the ps3 could do 4d, nevermind 3d?

4D was explained here before, search works now so may be able to find it. 4D is about real time aging of the enviroment ie time, so theres the 4 dimendion for you. For example food going mouldy in real time, plants gradually wilting etc. Anyway enough about 4D now.

By that definition, any of the current gen consoles can do 4d then. All it takes are some animated textures with scripting tied in.

no, Because that would not be ever changing, it would be fixed pattern. No matter how much script, or how many textures.

4D was about an algorithm that naturally created a texture. No pre rendered animations. Which would take a lot of processing power, Which is the main reason there was talk of PS3 only 4D (The Cell)

But as said, This thread is 3d, There have been threads abotu 4D already, where time and time again, its been explained

4D is a non-descriptive and misleading buzzword in this context. Games have always had time as a dimension even if they didn't simulate the effect time has on certain things. I hate silly buzzwords like that. It's actually worse than "next-gen".

This 3D thing is truly 3D which sounds pretty cool. But it's not going to become a mainstream feature if it doesn't work with the majority of displays. Plus people aren't going to want to wear funny glasses when they play games.

i guess its only a matter of time before its tweaked to work on lcd/plasma
I really dont understand why there is so much negativity when someone says the word "sony" or "ps3", it is getting pretty sad that certain users feel they need to justify their purchase in EVERY post
they are putting new kit into a console at no extra cost (assuming its just s firmware upgrade) why on earth would you complain??

Not to mention more competition is better for the consumer as if it is a success other companies will be either slashing prices or coming out with more innovations
People who can use it, will, those who cant there is no difference to their game at all.
This is actually pretty cool when it comes to movies as its more than any current media pc can do, so i suspect its aimed to the home cinema market rather than the gaming one.

As for dynamic aging and such (4d), it would be pretty cool in a rpg if your character ages as your playtime increases, imagine it being implemented in a mmporg or online rpg

Maybe they should call it... Fable... lol

So where is this 4D then? Any examples. Oh wait wrong thread.. use search etc...

I hate gimmicks like this. Doesn't this "3D" feature require a stupid noisy headset that flickers at 60hz alternating per eye?

My friend has one of those. The only game he tried it on was SoF2. It wasn't really 3D... just gave it a little more... dont know how I can put it... maybe depth? it wasn't like 3D glasses and a paper image. I can see the flicker giving someone serious head aches.
