Couldn't see a thread on this. So what do people think? Yes its a bridge camera and yes £3000+ worth of DSLR/full frame kit will be better but I love what they have tried to offer.

I haven't handled one and the price is quite high but I think its a great step in the right direction for bridge cameras. Something started by the Panasonic FX200 with its 2.8 lens which was good but always limited by its sensor. Now we have a bigger sensor plus more of a DSLR focus.

For a camera to put in a bag as an all in one it looks very promising, only thing is any time I have handled a bridge camera they always felt lacking. Look forward to some reviews and price drops :)

Seems like Sony have admitted defeat in trying to compete with Nikon/Canon with DSLRs so they're making stuff like the A7/A7R, RX100/RX100 II and now this.

I think this will sell well, it doesn't have the stupid amounts of zoom that most bridges seem to compromise optical quality for.

The only thing going against it is the huge price tag, but technically it looks a superb bit of kit with a very useful zoom range.

nice idea, but i think it's abit too steep.

i think sony is currently trying to re-coupe some of their R&D money. look at their RX1, RX100. lots of R&D gone into those, but the end product is ok/good, but not game-changing.

Anything game changing would involve an even bigger sensor an even faster lens and a massive price and weight increase. Short of redesigning how lenses work there will always be some compromise. It certainly stands out from the other bridge cameras for me and if they push in this direction maybe others will follow and further advancement and better prices will follow. Hopefully.

edit: The price could do with dropping but how much would you have to spend to get a similar range/quality? (genuine question as out of the loop when it comes to cameras)

It was never £1000 though.

It was not too far off that at list price, (£650-700 as Jansey says).
To Me the RX10 looks to be much better value for money than the RX100 at launch though, the faster, longer more versatile lens adds a far greater range of uses. However, it is still too expensive foir what it is but not as bad as the RX100, although the RX100 is much more interesting now the older version can be had cheaper.

I would rather pick up a Nikon 1 though and some lenses plus FT1 adapter, especially when Nikon reiterates the sensor. Also, Nikon should really be releasing cameras like this, Nikon 1 but with fixed lens.

Paid £480 for my RX100 when released.
RX1 & RX100 look pretty sexy imo. RX10 looks like another damn ugly Sony DSLR.

Edit:
With that said it looks like a decent cam. Just not something I would ever buy.

Sony RX10 Internal Pop Up Flash

Hello All - I am an amateur photographer and have just purchased a Sony RX10 camera to replace a pocket compact. I have a question regarding the built in pop up flash and have received no joy from Sony support. I have set the camera to Intelligent Auto mode with auto flash and also fill flash. In dark conditions the flash does not pop up automatically and only operates if I first press the manual flash button beside it. My question is should the flash pop up automatically if the settings are correct or is it purely a manual button pop up operation? Many thanks for any help.

I don't know what Intelligent Auto mode means.

On DSLRs and some high end compacts if the exposure mode is one of the semi-manual modes like aperture or shutter priority, then the flash will not automatically pop up.

On a fully automatic mode (include SOME scene modes like portrait, macro and pet) the flash will pop up, but not for some automatic scene modes like landscape because the flash wont help. In some intelligent fully auto modes the camera might try to understand what kind of scene the photo is before deciding to use the flash or raise the ISO. E.g. if the camera thinks it is a landscape shot it might not pop the flash, if it has a some fancy face detection and detects faces then it will pop the flash. All of this is camera dependent.

I see this place is selling the Sony RX10 for only £670
