It seems like something of a case of SONY cutting off it's nose...
For the moment ignoring the merits of the hardware and which is better, the general public just doesn't seem to be able to conceive of dishing out such a large amount of cash for what is perceived as a gaming console.
Personally I see one of two things happening - SONY make a largish price cut on the console prior to it's European release or the consoles are just going to sit on the shelf and gather dust.
This isn't an observation on the quality of the device because I have not heard of any major issues with the hardware or the software, this is mearly an observation on the apparent marketing 'strategy' by SONY. I'm kinda loath to say it, but in integrating the Blue Ray drive SONY may very well have priced themselves out the market.
