Sony Stereos, any good?

Sony, Kenwood, Grundig, Goodmans = t3h suxzorz. Even the high end Kenwood stuff isnt that great and is only comparable to much cheaper Pioneer gear.

Why buy something from a food mixer and white goods supplier? You wouldnt so dont spout on about Kenwoods being good. If you were 18-20 when you had one then fine as clearly you were never experienced enough to know better :D

Pionner - Alpine or if you are stupid and money is no object - Nakamachimanmaiamamaaiamamauauchi

For a start, you can get sony and kenwood out of the same breath of air as grundig and goodmans, sony and kenwood are much better than them, i agree low end sony is pretty poor but still a big improvement on any goodmans / grundig unit, kenwood on the other hand, i personally can't fault it, much better than low end sony stuff, even the low end kenwood stuff is, the more you spend on a kenwood unit - like Sony, it improves. As for your comment about kenwood white goods, they are 2 different companies all together.

The food stuff company....

First established by entrepreneur Kenneth Wood in 1947, Kenwood started life as Woodlau Industries before changing its name to Kenwood shortly afterwards. sauce

the Hifi/Car audio company

History of Kenwood - Japan
1946 Established Kasuga Radio Co. Ltd. In Komagane City, Nagano Prefecture, Japan

So go do your homework before blasting a well proven car audio company.

Oh, i own a kenwood HU and cannot fault it :D

In what way would you rate a Nakamichi unit better than a high end Pioneer for example?

I find them very cold and clinical on the whole part, whilst they do sound good i like the warmth of an expensive Pioneer :)

That's exactly what I would have said I like about Nakamichi - warmth .... but a natural-sound, not woolly warmth. But then, perception of sound is a very personal thing. I've used Nakamichi, on and off, for about 35 years, dating back to their old reference domestic cassette decks ... and they (deservedly IMHO) were widely regarded as being the best available at any price. I've still currently got a Nak (RD-450, for any ancient history buffs out there) running some old Kenwood speakers via a Kenwood KAC-721 amp, from a 12v supply, in a workshop .

Oh, and that Nak is a cassette unit and, by quite a long way, was the best cassette unit I ever had.

But as for how I'd rate a Nak over a high-end Pioneer, well, these days I probably wouldn't. Nak's have their own sound, and some people love it. Others don't. They also tend to have a 'traditional' (some would call it old-fashioned) style, which again, some people prefer. And in more recent times, they also have a reputation for reliability problems. I have no idea whether it's deserved or not, though I've always found them bulletproof .... as per that circa 1990 RD-450 that's STILL in use.

A lot of the faith in Nakamichi comes from brand name. In the past, they also specialised in top-grade electronics and physical construction, too. But people used to think Nakamichi when cassette decks were mentioned, like they think Ferrari when sports cars are mentioned.

Interesting how they have the same logo though
No, they don't.

Kenwood (Japanese audio and comms gear) use a small triangular red flash over the W in Kenwood, whereas Kenwood (UK food equipment) use red diagonals on the K in Kenwood. There's a similarity in style, yes, but they're not the same.

Oh, and no I didn't hotlink those images :p

Anyone got one of these?

Looks quite cool and I like the idea of being able to put clips from my favorite "home" movies on the screen ;) ;)

they have a similar logo - as agw_01 has pointed out, but they are still a completely different company, i am the first to say i won't buy a pair of speakers from a company like goodmans/grundig who venture into other products, i'd rather buy my speakers from a company who specialise in making speakers, i.e Jamo, Tannoy, B&W etc, i used to rate wharfedale too till they started making televisions and stuff.

Still, there must be some copyright infringement with those logos, maybe both companies agreed to let them be.

Thats a similar (newer) model to the one I have, I doubt your'll be disappointed. Good price too

Mananged to get one for £58 in the end so I'm dead chuffed with that. Going to be miles better than the standard radio/cassette thats in my Corsa at the moment. :p

Yes mate.

You can use a little Pioneer program to upload .AVI files to the HU. Should prove amusing :)

Looked around for opinions on it and it seems a bit unreliable. Still not decided on which to get. The 77 seems the most stylish but this movie thingy looks quite cool on the 86.

My mate has one of those. Well, I say mate, it's someone I talk to on MSN. He lives in Scotland so I've never actually seen it, but from the videos he sent me, it looks excellent!

Is it the 9600 that has the display behind the flip down panel? Oh how I want that unit :(

edit... Yep, it is...

Single DIN but with a flip down panel. If you look carefully, the LCD display at the top of the flip down panel (not the large display) shows the volume level.
