PS3 drive died tother day, my console is way out of warranty and I have no proof of purchase, damn.

Right, so armed with Sale of Acts Good info and a persistant, read-to-battle attitude i have just called Sony support awaiting for them, once they realise the warranty status, to ask for some ridiculous amount of monehss to get the console sorted.

Much to my surprise, they were very helpful, polite and efficient. They didn't question my warranty, just asked for a few details, put the call through and explained the whole process very well.

I'm very surprised must admit, so one happy customer! top marks for Sony. :D

You wouldn't gave got very far calling Sony and quoting SOGA as it applies to the retailer where you bought it from. Just thought you should know so you don't make an ass of yourself one day by ranting at a manufacturers customer support person :p

I had a Sony crt monitor many years back, and when it developed a fault they were super quick to come and drop off a newer model and take the older model away, and I had no receipt or box or anything. Sonys all round support for any of their products is second to none it seems. :)

I have an xbox 360 which died last week, it's the first time for me and its almost been 2 yrs since I bought it. I will find out this week how Microsofts support compares...

Indeed Sony support has always been fantastic for me. I mean Sony in general not just with the PS brand. Sure they do make some dodgy or even downright strange products sometimes, but at least you know if anything breaks you will get it sorted quickly and efficiently.

So what did they actually say then ?

Bah mine just died too and Im in the same predicament - but its second hand on top of it - do I have a leg to stand on? (obviously wont mention it being second hand :p)...

Drive seems to have gone as I was playing FIFA 09 online, commentary disappeared and the score and everything. Someone scored and it just sit in the celebration mode. Tried another game, blu ray and DVD and just not recognised - though the system does switch itself on when trying to put a disc in so I assume its just the laser(s).

I must admit the last 2-3 days I didnt hear a wierd chugging sound every few mins and wondered if it was the HDD access, guess it wasnt :(

Oh well - got an Op in 2 days so I guess I wasnt going to be playing it much anyway :(:p

Question - Im gonna back it up - should I replace the HDD with the old one just in case they swapout rather than repair (doubt they do that for the 60Gb version)

Definately take it out. If Sony loose it by accident they won't replace it with one of the same size.

Will try to call them later - got to go to the Drs.

Any help would be gratefully received - obviously if it means buying a new one then I guess, so be it :/

Just rang them and they are gonna pick it up for repair on Monday - though they have quoted me a 14 day turn around so unsure if Ill have it before Christmas (fingers crossed)...

Im over the moon considering my situation so Ill wait and see - cant do anything for the next week anyway so its minimal fuss really...

Can anyone confirm how quickly they repair these units? They cant swap it out as its a 60Gb unfortunately...

Wow thats great service.

I heard in another thread it took 7 days so you could get lucky. Better than paying for the repair anyway.

The mad thing is that all they asked for was my name, address and serial number, no questioning regards the warranty, no stupid questions and asking for unnecessary tests to be performed to confirm the issue.

They just dealt with it in an efficient, adult way, which Im just not used to when calling any company regards a problem. The weird thing is that I dont feel lucky that they dealt with it, it just seems standard, which really makes me consider Sony for a lot more things than just consoles (though I do like/own a fair few of their AV stuff)

Cheers mate,

Already had it and it went well (shoulder keyhole surgery), though typing one handed is annoying :p. Have to work out how Im gonna get the original HDD swapped back with my weaker arm and a heavy PS3 - will have to call for minions...
