Sony WH-1000XM4 - Thoughts?

I have the WH-1000XM4 and they are excellent for music, daily commute and if I am listening on PC generally. However for gaming I use the Logitech Pro-X wireless headphonse, the mic is important and the Sony aren't great there. I also find they don't do as well direction wise.

Thanks.

That sounds great (pun not intended).

I have a seperate desk mic but would never have expected them to be good for that. Adequate for making phone calls?

After finally biting the bullet on some WH-1000XM4 a few months back I have to say I am pretty disappointed by the battery life on them, maybe I just got a duff set but I seem to be forever charging them.

I looked further and took a punt on the XM5

Normally have wired headphones so just concerned with how much money in these has gone on actual audio quality, drivers and such and how much is on other guff?

that doesn't sound right at all, I'd be going back to Sony to raise this. I've got some XM2's and after 5 years the battery life is still outstanding.

Got the XM4s for my birthday. The NC is outstanding. The quality is pretty decent but coming from BTNC 4.50s, I was expecting a bit more. The battery life is also very good. It takes an age to connect to devices and they were definitely not for the gym, almost completely broke with a wee bit of sweat.

Bittersweet but still rate them overall.

Have to say, after having xm4s for a few months I have sacked off my wired IEMs

I actually started to get ear irritation from IEMs so wasn't so hard to give up.

I use them for everything now.

Teams calls at work.
Music
Games.

What made me get them? Multi point. And it's such a useful feature. Only thing I wish it had more than 2 devices simultaneously.

It means I can have my work laptop and phone on at same time. Listen to music on phone. Soon as a teams call comes in it takes charge.

I've never owned NC phones before. So I was blown away. Sometimes it's too good. Can't hear anyone talking to you.
But there are features to help there too

Bought last week. Returning this week. Will get Bose QC45 instead.

The Sony has great NC (I already own WM1000XM4) and works perfect on mobile. But I use mine a lot to watch TV and the audio/video goes out of sync after about 10 mins. A mute unmute seems to fix it.

Many reports of this on forums (I should have checked :D ). Issue occurs on LG Oleds (my use case) and I also tried on a Samsung qled and 2 older Samsung LCDs.

Disappointing, and I can't be bothered to wait for a firmware fix as these are at the end of their life so I doubt it will get fixed.

edit: the multipoint audio also isn't as intuitive as the Bose (I currently have a 5-6 year old QC35 v1 which is what I'm seeking to replace).

Never used to watch TV but could see that being annoying. I tried the Bose a few times and have never got on with them soundstage wise for whatever reason. I do think the new XM5's look naff now though and much cheaper than my XM4's.

Not sure what the next step up in Audio with bluetooth and NC is over the Bose & Sony tbh. If there was something worth looking at over these I would be interested.

I'm in the same position, I've got some XM2's that are a bit old in the tooth now and AirPod pro's for everyday use. I'm kinda hoping that apple do a really good followup on the AirPod max as I really like the handoff between my phone, iPad and MacBook. Perhaps that's overplayed by the fact that my XM2's can only be connected to one device at a time so if I want to use them with a different device I have to manually pair again. I get that the newer models support multi device.

I’ve never had a problem with the disconnection issue but I guess it must be due to some sort of setting. I’ve always found them excellent, although there is a problem that is well known when one of the NC earphones within the cups fails and causes a screeching sound to result.

I'm having the same issue on my LG with the disconnecting and audio desyncing.

Some LG update in the summer (2022) ruined it. Having the same issue with galaxy buds, airpods pro 2, XM4s and XM5s.

I ended up getting an apple TV and just connected to that instead. I'm sure a cheaper/ alternative streaming device would also work.

I don't know how similar they XM4s are to the XM3s, but I was really not impressed with the musical quality of the XM3s.
Don't get me wrong, the noise cancelling was ace, but I was very disappointed with them musically, very "gloopy".

For ref, my day to day cans are a pair of Sennheiser HD600s, driven by a decent DAC and dedicated amp.

In fairness you are comparing a £400 headset with signicant peripherals against a Bluetooth set of cans. I'm not surprised they don't match up.

However compared to similar priced wireless cans they still some of the best headphones on market musicality with them much more refined than the Bose in my opinion that really felt muddy.

The momentum series sonically were similar but the noise cancelling was not as comprehensive. And personally as silly as it is the momentum 3s were ugly as sin.

The momentum 4 look better. Would be interested in them as test but they basically copied Sony in style (although the cans are way too plain on the xm5s) and controls but not as refined. But if you 100% into pure sonically the new M4 do seem to take it to another level.

If they can refine the controls and get the noise cancelling without the loss sonically then I'd look into the next series as a replacement to my xm4s I've currently got.

For music I found them pretty decent especially for stuff like commuting but the mic quality not so great, I've got a wired set up for gaming with 7xx open back with a lapel mic and went to a closed back 770s for music.
