Hi guys. Not posted much in here so be gentle as I know what you lot are like.:p

A little history: I took 6 or so lessons back in 2003 in a Fiat Punto 5 speed manual. I did great according to my instructor and he suggested for me to take my theory and he would put me in for my text as soon as I passed the theory. I gave up my lessons that week due to some serious problems at home. I prefer not to go into that and it had NO affect on my driving and has nothing to do with learning to drive and you don't need to know.:)

Ok, after some thought I will be looking into taking some driving lessons soon. for one, I am (read: We are) expecting a baby come January and it would help having a car before or not long after the birth.

I will be learning in an automatic.

So, on with a few questions.

I have a Labrador dog, so ideally would prefer and estate or a car with plenty of space in the boot storage area.

I am NOT after a small hot hatch or anything like that. After running a few quotes for research purposes an estate or bigger type car was cheaper by far.

Not fussed about car age but help choosing the right car is welcome from you guys.

Has to be automatic. I have problems with my left arm/hand and after driving a manual under supervision recently I found it hard to change gear. Using it for everything else it is fine. So Auto is has to be really.

I think that has sort of covered it. Any questions please ask.:)

I don't really understand what you're asking - do you want to pick a car to buy after you pass your test?

Edit turns out I'm just an idiot

For 2.5k you'll not have much in the way of choice. Something like a Passat estate springs to mind.

No, not quite but give me some ideas on what sort would suit my needs? I did a quick quote on a 55 plate Astra estate (£1700) with 100k miles for £690 a year insurance. I know what you guys think of Astras. It was just getting ideas of insurance and what I could get for 2k ish.

I am just looking for your knowledge on what's the best auto to look for and what price for mileage ratio and what sort fo car, estate or bigger car with larger boot, That sort of thing

Nothing wrong with an auto Astra estate. It's not going to set your world on fire by any means but it gets you from A to B with plenty of space. We had a 1.8 auto 58 plate in Design spec for 3 years, never had any issues with it. I carted all sorts of stuff around in it, even managed to squeeze a divan bed in so it'll take your dog no problems.

Cheers avrc. Im not looking to show off or have something that will set my world alight lol. Basically it will be a work horse. looking to go camping so will be driven on mud/gravel/dirt etc with room for dog and camping gear.

I did drive (under supervision) a V40 (iirc) estate about 5 years ago. Found it nice drive.

You could use the paddles - but the budget would need to be multiplied by about 3 to get anything with them

Yeah I have noticed that. Something to look out for a few years down the line maybe. My budget is based on what I can save up from now till January.

I assume because he has problems with his left hand which makes changing gear tricky :)

Christ, note to self, don't open a thread leave it open while doing other stuff and then read through and reply without refreshing!
