Its excellent i have to say. Im not sure how you will go about updating a single copy to be honest, i have only used it in conjunction with the Sophos enterprise manager which pushes updates to the client.

I know you can download the updates manually if you have a username/login but I can't remeber if there is an auto update feature like most of the home based AV's have.

Excelent program- we run it on the school network. The management console (SAVAdmin) is brilliant as it allows you to see which machines are running which virus defination tables and update them remotley etc. Normally updates about every week or so- ours updated today infact- it should now be on version 4.02 I think :)

Indeed, the ease of management on a large network is invaluable. I also use it as i'm licensed through the Uni.

how can i find out how long i am licensed for? does it say it somewhere in the program like it does with norton etc.?

The chances are, if you got it from uni you will be on a perpetual license and therefore there won't be an end date.

I wasn't very happy with the older version (before the purple shield) due to a lot of false detections. The main thing going for Sophos at work is their server-side tools for monitoring other desktops on our domain now that the newer version has been rolled out. I think our license is due to expire sometime this year so I'll have to wait and see what happens.

It's also handy that it can be used on our student desktops (Windows 2000 with Novell client) as well so it reduces the resources we have to use to support it.

We're using it for our remote users who will use their laptops from places like CERN to connect to our network on the condition that they use our anti-virus software for updating and they seem to be happy with that (I think we have a VPN they connect to  ).

One problem I had with Sophos was that I felt it was more resource-hungry than other anti-virus products although if it's free (you probably have the same site/staff/student license we run) then you can't really complain if it does the job.

I've got it and it doesn't pick up anything ever, never had 1 alert from it in about 2 years.

I also got it from the UNi of Portsmouth on their student disc.

I had a trojan and keylogger and it didn't pick them up and someone hijacked my msn hotmail account and messenger stuff.

Trend MIcro's Housecall online free scan picked up everything though!
