hi
i have got 6gb (2x2GB + 2x1GB) here, well 4gb arriving soon
i would like to change to a motherboard that sopports 6GB
i was looking into AMD, as the AM2+ motherboards do still sopport the new AMD3 processors, wheras intel socket 775 is getting old. this is only for infomation, i am still looking at my intel options.

any motherboard/CPU you can reccomend?
doubt that changing to DDR3 is worth it
thanks in advance

P.S. didnt know where to put this thread, it involves CPU, motherboard and RAM so chose this one. please forgive me if i have messed it up

Well most boards can support up to 8gb. You just need 2x2gb and 2x1gb RAM sticks.

Unfortunately the P31 chipset can only support up to 4gb, so the cheapest option for you is to jump to a P45 chipset board.

And yes, AM2+ boards can support up to 8gb, look around for the 700 series chipset if you want to move to AMD.

But you just found one that does

As quoted from the Foxconn motherboard you linked:
Supporting up to 16GB of Dual Channel DDR2 memory at 1066MHz

Personally I would stick to Intel. Moving from the Core series to the Athlon series is more of a side step. I would save up a bit more for a Phenom II series if you want to move to AMD. But then you might as well move to DDR3 at the same time. I say the best move for you is to get a P45 board and a second hand Q6600 CPU if you don't want to spend too much.

Looking at OcUK, they don't seem to stock any more AM2+ 700 series motherboards anymore. You may have to look at other places if you really want to move to AMD.

fair enough, P45 should definately be good enough.
new spec will probably be along these lines

Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 / 6600 or Intel Pentium Dual-Core E6700
Foxconn P45AL Intel P45
6GB dual channel DDR2-1066
Gigabyte GeForce GTX 460 OC 768MB
BeQuiet Pure Power L7 530W Power Supply

for £200-300

SOCKET 775 ISNT DEAD! :)
