I think I'm just being thick here so need some help.
So I have my car on my drive & it's Taxed till end of 1st 2013 & MOT'ed, The insurance ran out yesterday & as I don't use it I'm not going to bother for a while, Do I need to SORN it ?
I've read the website & it says Yes I have to SORN it even though it's taxed & on a Private drive way, Are they Mad ?
I have 14 days to do it so no panic but need confirmation that I have read it properly & Do need to SORN it.
Cheers for any help.

Prety sure you do need to SORN it. Our lovely government introduced this a while ago to try and combat the high levels of uninsured drivers in this country.

I think it's that new law about uninsured cars.

If you SORN it now you will get a refund of your tax for the remaining full months.

So I have to SORN it & refund the Tax or can I just SORN it ? Think it'll be easier to just insure it again. :p

@ZG002 I read all the sites/info but it wasn't clear to me, Motors section knows everything Everybody knows that. :D

As ZG002, you don't have to request a refund of tax, it depends how long you will keep it off road for I guess.

Ok guys Cheers for clearing that up for me. I'll leave the thread open as I'm sure there's plenty more people that didn't realise you had to SORN a car that is Taxed & on a Private drive.

I'm in a similar situation, I have a car I'm trying to sell, it's parked on private land, taxed but I still have to have it insured until it sells - unless I sorn it which I cba doing.

It doesn't cost anything to SORN it and have it SORN'ed, other than the 10 minutes it takes to tick a box and post a form off

People can not test drive a SORN car, Which becomes a pain when trying to sell it.

Less of the

Of course, then any potential buyer can't test drive it nor take it away same-day unless it happens to be during post office hours AND has a valid insurance cert for it.

Bloody pain in the arse this new rule, it does nothing to stop the uninsured masses (really, are the people who drive round uninsured going to care if they have to drive round untaxed?), it just harms the motorist who has two cars but only one policy. No longer can I keep my 2nd car taxed in the garage to drive on a whim at the weekend by temporarily insuring it that day over the phone, no, I have to keep it insured on it's own policy at all bloody times.

There is the option of leaving it taxed and uninsured (although you're not supposed to). I did this to a car I was selling last year from the middle of October for around 3 months and I never heard a thing.
