I registered my car as SORN wef 31 October with the intention of scrapping it and getting my local council to remove it. Its been parked at the rear of my house in a garage area with two entrances ( one either end of the block of garages) but i just never got around to getting it removed, shear lazyness on my behalf. The garaged area is off a side street so the only traffic it see's are the cars of people using their garages. It was parked between a block of garages so it was in no way obstructing or infact causing any problems with the flow of cars that used the area. Now i know the law is the law and it shouldnt have been there but what fine am i looking at ? I was talking to the policeman who wrote the notice to send to DVLA and he says i may or may not get a request for the outstanding Tax on the car, even tho' its been SORN for about a month and a half so that would be around £15 in road tax for being on a public road. He didnt mention any other fines and even arranged to have the car taken away for free. Has anyone had a similar experience and what was the out come. What worries me is that the car is not insured or MOT'd so will that make things worse. I genuinely thought it would be ok where it was as it wasnt parked on a public highway as such and out the way.

I think it's an automatic £70 fine from the DVLA itself sent to the owner but it doesn't make sense because the DVLA don't go round doing it. They do drive round clamping unlicensed cars round here, I guess its the council and yours would get a clamp if it's on a public highway. It has to be kept on private land for SORN to be valid.

Is it actually on the public highway or is the little side road round to your garages a private road?

PK!

It was parked between a gap in the block of garages which is wide enough to fit two cars in , however its still classed as a public road as it would be maintained by the council. I i honestly though that it would be ok to leave it here until i got around to getting rid of it. I called DLVA and the lady i spoke to said i may just get a warning letter - with my luck i will get a fine. if i could post a link to google maps it would make it much easier to show where it was. I have a garage there but i use it for my other car, after id spoke to the policeman i moved the car immediately into the garage so it is no longer on a public road/highway. If you enter my postcode NE32 3PL into google earth and then just zoom in without moving the map you will see the area it was parked. You will see 3 cars parked between garage blocks - a white car, a grey car and a gold car - the car in question is the grey one.

Yeah the policeman said i would just probably get a demand for the back tax but he said i may not even get anything.........yeah right

Its always the case that they target the "soft targets" as its easy money for them. My crime was a misunderstanding of what is considered as "on" or "off" a public road/highway. Its not as if i abandoned it 3miles from my house and left it to rot, it was at the rear of my house, obstructing no one or anything. Once it was explained to me by the police it was in fact on a road i moved it straight into my garage.

I would have been quite happy for them to take it away there and then as the intention was for it to be scrapped anyway after i couldnt even sell it for parts. The policeman was fine with me and he said he would arrange for it to be taken away if i wanted as they have some kind of arrangement with DVLA - obviously i agreed and now im just waiting for 1. the fine 2. a letter or something telling me when their coming to get it.
