Ive got an external sata to usb hdd enclosure. I have it plugged into a USB switch with two controlling devices connected:

my doovde player which has a USB port (this works fine through the switch)

my pc, so that I can put files on the external from the pc (does not work)

The problem is that when the external drive is connected through the switch to the pc, windows has problems with it. It either says its working ok in device manager but there is no drive letter in my computer, or I get a message saying that there is a problem with the device (a baloon pop-up when windows tries to install).

Ive tried different usb cables and no joy. Any thoughts?

[edit] the external enclosure works fine when directly connected to the pc (i.e. not through the switch)

bit of a thread revival here, but i've solved the problem and thought I would post my solution here for anyones reference. The problem was that I was using a USB1 cable from the switch to the PC, I tried another cable (which was a bit thicker, so I assumed it was a USB2 cable after discovering that USB2 cables are of a higher quality (shielding and materials I suppose)) and voila! It works fine.
