Looks like the iconic Mitsubishi Evo has been shelved in favour of small, environmentally friendly cars. :(

Don't worry guys, i feel your pain.

The Mitsubishi Evo series will not continue into its eleventh model, says Gayu Eusegi, global product director. He may as well have kidnapped Santa, in the minds of rally fans everywhere.

“There is still a demand,” says Eusegi, “but we must stop.” Why? Because, he says, Mitsubishi will concentrate on smaller and more environmentally-friendly cars such as the Global Small Concept, the supermini that will compete against the Toyota Aygo. In addition, Mitsubishi is going all out on EV technology by introducing eight full electric or hybrid cars by 2015.

By cutting out their motorsport heritage, Eusegi said that customers would find it “easier to understand” what Mitsubishi was about. The company pulled out of the World Rally Championship in 2005, anyway, and there’s no room for big-winged dirt heroes in their continuous quest for lowering CO2. And yes, that means no diesel Evo, either.

So prepare yourselves for the end of an era: no more Tommi Mäkinen editions, no FQ400 models with turbochargers the size of cantaloupes, and no more need for Ralliart other than a nifty tire and wheel package. At least Subaru fans will rejoice that they’ve “won” this battle with the STI, though they’ll come around to the realization that fevered competition is better than no competition at all.

Read this last night, all I can say is "OMG :("

Another one of the few remaining awesome cars is going, sucks what the world is coming to due to all the stupid fuel taxes.

A sad, sad day. This whole C02 thing makes me rage uncontrollably. Wouldn't be surprised if the STI is next to get the chop :(

WTF!
seriously this cant be true, WHYYYYYYYY
EDIT: in the space of 5 seconds my disappointment has turned to rage.

They're looking at the long game, oil going ++ and in turn opening a whole new global market for fuel efficent cars.

Hopefully there will be salvation for the petrol head :(

:( :(As an impreza owner it make me angry that we are losing these great cars in the name of climate change. It will make no difference whilst there are more planes in the sky and china/india etc pump out huge amounts of co2as their manufacturing grows.

Thats the civic type r and Evo gone.

Oil is still cheap, the actual cost of petrol is ~46p / L

Rest is tax!

I can only hope there will be some amazing performance electric/hybrid cars in the near future.

makes me laugh that they think electric is the way forward, how many metals/materials etc are needed for electric cars? do they think the mining and manufacture are co2 neutral?

they can be if we use biofuel to power the mining machines, plus batteries are 95% recycled now

I just can't believe they've canned 20 years of racing heritage in one fell swoop. If anything, i thought the Impreza's/Evo's would be the only ones to survive this CO2 malarky due to the almost cult following they have and heritage in the name "Mitsubishi Evo".

The Evo and the Impreza were both successfull due to their rally involvement.

Seen as neither is used in top flight rallying any more, and WRC seems set on slowly killing itself (was anyone aware the new season has started already...) it was only a matter of time untill the road cars were dropped.

Don't know why they have to do this tbh, the European makers can make eco hippy cars while still pumping out high performance machines. Heck, even Nissan and Toyota can strike a balance.
Without the evo, what the heck are Mitsubishi? I can only assume they have seen Toyota want to make something exciting with the FT86 and want to take over their position through the noughties of making a full range of totally uninspiring cars.

this is a big suprise! They didnt even try a silly electric version! Although it would ruin the brand name!

These will turn into classic cars soon enough, hopefully they will not be forgoten

only if you see the WRC as the "top flight", which I no longer do since Group N stuff (like IRC) has the more powerful cars

TBH, Group N rules are far more fan friendly than S2000 or WRC rules
