Sorry guys, another 24" thread!

You're going to have to splash out if you want 1:1 mapping. At the moment, I can't think of anything under 300 that will do it and be VA.

Gateway FPD2485W

PVA panel 24". DVI, VGA, 2x Component, Composite and S-video, USB hub.

No HDMI but HDCP compatible over the DVI port.

This does do 1:1 mapping and has a fully adjustable screen (tilt/height/pivot)

Some backlight bleed in the corners if you look for it and the settings out of the box aren't perfect (fine when tweaked) - but other than that - pretty smart. Available for £295, same price now as it was in september when I got mine.

A bargain in september, not so much anymore - but its a 1:1 capable PVA screen with plenty of inputs.

yep the gateway- is indeed a VA panel. Some people claim "inverse ghosting" but can't say I've ever noticed it myself.

Out of the box - its a bit bright and a bit blue.

Once tweaked, the only real downside is the slight backlight bleed in the corners (only noticeable on a black screen with all the other lights off)

Just read a Review and am impressed.
im aware that i will have to properly calibrate it etc. but this worries me.

'About the only real problem we encountered during testing is the inability of the Gateway FPD2485W to reproduce a smooth gradient scale. Banding is very apparent in such cases, and while this won't really affect gaming or to a lesser extent video content, some users and especially graphics artists are likely to be disappointed. We could also hope for a more streamlined OSD interface, but the color gradients are a far bigger concern. Overall color accuracy is good, with a relatively low Delta E score, but it seems that the Faroudja signal processor may not actually be doing as well as we would like. The image processor seems the more likely culprit, as in other areas the panel appears to be the same as that used on Dell's 2407WFP.'

Being used for Video editing, special effects, and some Image editing. would this not cause me a big problem?

just found this on another review

'However, after tinkering with the display's settings I was able to minimize the banding problem by going into the OSD's advanced menu, using the color applet and changed it out of any of the "modes" they have to warm color, cool color or user color. The banding almost completely vanished; though there was still a little banding from about 70% gray to 90% gray. '

Im guessing id have to use the 'User color' anyway to reduce the blue you was talking about?

That doesnt look good either :(

All monitors have flaws - if you search around hard enough you can find flaws on any monitor.

The Gateway has a couple of flaws - but these are reflected in the price. When I bought mine for the current price back in September it was a bargain. Now this is not the case - although for someone who needs 1:1, lots of inputs and a PVA panel, it's still worth some consideration as it remains good value when considering this.

As for that review - the display is silent. We have a few "noisy electronics" in our house and this screen is not one of them. The OSD is a bit fiddly to play with all of the more complex settings, but the simple settings are straightforward and easy to find.

It's tricky reading reviews - as they are deliberately looking for things to criticise the monitor on. I'm not particularly picky, and other than the viewing angles on a TN screen and backlight bleed, I've never picked up on any problems on any monitors.

I ran some software for banding and running side by side to a Dell laptop (1 yr old 15.4" 1440*900) The dell banded slightly less at the darker end of the scale (in line with the reviewers 70-90% gray area)

However - i'm running specialist software which exacerbates the problem to find the fault - if I don't notice it day to day, can it be called a problem?

Also remember, you'll be buying it from a supermarket - pick it up in store and if you don't like it, it's going to be much easier to return than if you buy it from somewhere else.

fair points there mate. Would Tesco Metro have one do u know lol?

if not ill just get it from their website.

people have moaned about horrible ghosting.... reverse ghosting sorry. Wondering whether this will bother me.

also found a thread somewhere of about 100 odd pages of people moaning about it, and returning them eetc. some people having up to 4 monitors lol.

tbh i think im jst gna go for it and see if i like it.

There's threads like this about the 2407-HC, the 2408, the acer 2416w.....etc etc..

The reverse ghosting has never bothered me - If I set something up specifically to look for it i can just about spot it. But in day to day usage? Never noticed it - I play a fair bit of TF2, and even as scout it's unoticeable.

Order it off the website and get it delivered to your local store that has a "direct" section. There's a code for £5 off on the net somewhere, if you do go for the gateway use it.

My recommendation: When you get the screen look for the problems and tweak the monitor to your satisfaction. Then spend a few days using the monitor normally to see if these issues actually bother you in day to day use. If they do - return it. They don't bother me, but you may be much more sensitive lol!

thanks for the help mate. Looked in a Tesco metro today and they didnt have any electronics at all, so ill have to find a proper one i think. God knows where in manchester that is!

Thanks again :) pretty solid on gettig this one now :)

Bought one, love it, its huge!!!

its faulty tho so will be replacing :(

the power supply inside i think is faulty as whenevr i adjust it or move it causing vibration or tap it on the side, it flickers on and off. the buttons on the right stay fully lit though, so i think its the connection from the power supply to the panel, have contacted gateway to ensure it is a fault, and will be returning to tesco over the next couple of days

gutted :(

Rubbish! Sorry to hear that - glad you liked the screen.

I've never had any such issues with mine *bangs monitor on side*

I accidently damaged mine (big black mark on screen) from poor transportation, still usable but I had insurance so I've just got the payout and I'm picking up a replacement tommorow. I'm hoping that it's not a bad batch of monitors out there - will let you know if I have similar problems.
