Hey all,

Sorry noob here, basic question how do i setup raid on my DS3 with two Western Digital Caviar Special Edition 80GB 800JD SATA-II 8MB Cache or is it not possible?

Ive had a look at the ds3 book and its old english to me anyone know of a guide on how to do this?

I havent installed windows yet do i need to do that first? at the moment it picks them up as seperate drives and wants me to install windows on one of them.

Cheers for any help.

If you want to use RAID you need to create the array first.

I did a step by step for that board yesterday or the day before, gimme a mo and I'll dig out a link.

EDIT: It was the DQ6, not the DS3 I did....

Anyhoo you'll need to:

  • Create the RAID driver floppy, instructions should be in the mobo manual
  • Connect the disks to the Gigabyte SATA ports
  • In the BIOS set the Gigabyte ports to RAID mode
  • Exit the main BIOS
  • When prompted go into the GigaRAID BIOS, the splash screen will tell you the key combination

I've not got the manual to hand at this point so the rest is going to be from memory. You'll need to create a new array, select the type of array (I assume you want RAID0 for speed) & set the stripe size (32K or 64K is best).

Once the array is created go back to the main BIOS and check the boot order is CD then the RAID array. Insert the Windows CD & boot the PC. Press F6 when prompted at the bottom of the screen then go through the install as normal. Press S when prompted to load the RAID drivers, insert the floppy and pick the correct driver if you're given a choice. The rest of the install is as normal.
