Hi, you guys helped me build my last 2 computers because building them is much easier than speccing them. Anyway I have a Geforce GTX 970 running on a Z97X-SLI-CF motherboard.

I'm looking to update to the max graphics card the board can take which seems to be a 1080. Do I just buy any of them and they'll work? I can only see 2nd hand, what's the odds I pay nearly £200 and it doesn't work?

Any recommendations of where I could still get a new one or is that out of the question because of the age?

Thanks Spud.

Dont pay £200 for a 1080, they're closer to £100. You're not going to find a new one, they're 8 years old.

Something like a 6600 would be better.

Why is that card the max your board can take?

There are profiles on here (scroll down) where they run a 4080, so I think the limit is your budget and the CPU bottleneck, not the motherboard.

Agree with the above though, for ~£200 you should be looking at a new card (like 6600, 6650, 7600, 4060), not a used 1080 :o

i took the gamble the other day on a gtx 1070ti under 90 which was cheaper than a lot of 1070s and 1660s i saw and it has been working like a charm plus better than both those other 2. you have to take a gamble with 2nd hand sometimes.

of someone who also owns a 970, certainly need to upgrade. that 3.5vram issue is rubbish. you can get a gtx 980 from 50-60 which is much better than the 970 and can use all its 4gb vram properly, however there are much better options and you do seem to have the budget for a fair few. an rtx 2060 and 2070 go for less than 200 and would be a much better option if you dont buy new.

Ok thanks, I'm sure I read the 1080 was the best it could take, anyway that's why I always come here for advice. The CPU is i5-4690 @3.50 GHz and the card I have I can just see under the inch of dust is a MSI 970 and it's worked perfectly all these years. I see there's a MSI 4060 on Amazon for £270 so that's seems much better value than the £200 second hand as mentioned.

I assume this will fit then?

Thanks, Spud.

Might be tempted to try and find an i7 that fits that board as well. At least the hyper threading might help with later games and drinking a better gpu better.

I scrolled through some of the profiles and there was the following for the 4060:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI-CF (all builds)
OS: Windows 10
BIOS Date: 20160303
GPU vendor: Asus

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z97X-SLI-CF (all builds)
OS: Windows 10
BIOS Date: 20141017
GPU vendor: Gigabyte

I couldn't find any with a BIOS older than the latter date, which I suspect is the shipping BIOS.

You can scroll through some more if you want.

Would advise you to remove the competitors link as it's against the forum rules

If your going to spend £270 on a 4060 then you would be far better getting a 6750xt which can be had for £285.

Whats your budget? I'd personally not be buying a 4060 (try to avoid using the site UB you linked from)

I think £300 would be max. Looking at the 6750xt's now then. I assume the bottle neck won't be at the card more the CPU with one of those.
