I'm trying to sort out my diet as part of the new healthy Big Chris for 2006, I'm eating more fruit and less chocolate & crisps and it's going well so far. I eat breakfast every morning but just a bowl/bowl and a half of Weetos or Coco-Pops (I know, I'm just a big kid...)

What should I be changing to as a more healthy option? Special K? Bran Flakes or porridge? (bleugh).

I've spied a box of Quaker Oats in the cereal cupboard, will they do? They look a little bland and tasteless though...

I tend to drink water now I've given up smoking, but can do OJ too if you think it would be better?

water would be fine. Is this just a want to get healthier and fitter in general or do you have specific goals in mind?

If you don't like oatmeal then it wouldn't hurt to have a wholegrain cereal provided they don't have added sugar or salt. Shredded wheat or the like should be fine. If you find it a little bland then why not add some fruit to it?

Things like wheatabix are fine, putting a little sugar on them won't do you any harm, I personally prefer to mix fine oats with milk and protein powder and drink it, if you have a blender you can chuck a banana in, doesn't taste bad.

No specific goals really, I just figured if I'm going to be eating healthy then Weetos/Coco-Pops didn't really fit (although they're damn tasty :p ).

Will try Weetabix as I've had porridge before and it really doesn't float my boat.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

Oh yeah, I've started taking mutli-vitamin & mineral tablets each morning too, are they worth it or should I not bother?

My diet has been pretty bad for a few years now, can't believe my body has been getting all the bits and bobs that it needs from the pizza and crisps I've been eating...

Just have a bowl of Special K or Bran Flakes (or other healthy cereal). There is no need to go crazy and start eating rabbit food that you need to add things to so it tastes nice. Having skimmed milk is key, tastes just as good I find, and has none of the fat of it's semi or full fatted brethren.

There are many things I'll do to improve my diet, but advocating the use of skimmed milk isn't one of them I'm afraid. It's vile stuff, and I can't stand it. Full cream for the win :p .

I seem to recall eating Bran Flakes for a while but needing the bog within an hour of getting to work, so am gonna try Weetabix.

Well what about Semi Skimmed then? Eating healty cereal with full fat milk is like eating salad, but insisting on covering it with chocolate sauce.

Not even a fan of semi-skimmed I'm afraid, just tastes like water to me. Surely the full cream milk just has more fat in it, whereas eating a cereal not entirely consisting of chocolate and sugar will be a step in the right direction?

I couldn't be bothered to go downstairs to look at the nutritional values on the different milks (got all 3) but I stole this from a website
A large glass (about 200ml) of whole milk has 130 calories, nearly 8g fat and 230mg of calcium. The same amount of semi-skimmed milk has 70 calories, only 3g of fat and 240mg of calcium whilst a large glass of skimmed milk has 66 calories, a mere 0.2g of fat and 240mg of calcium. Not much difference between semi-skimmed and skimmed in terms of calories and calcium but quite a big difference between skimmed and whole in terms of calories and fat. Also, you’ll notice that both semi-skimmed and skimmed have slightly more calcium than whole milk. Why is that? Well, calcium is found in the watery part of the milk, not the cream part, so when milk is skimmed, all the calcium remains. An adequate amount of calcium in the diet will build strong bone tissue and help to prevent osteoporosis.
You'll find if you compare Frosties to Special K (as an example) the difference in calories isn't as big percentage-wise as the difference between milks.

I'm not so bothered about the calories though, I just didn't think I'd be getting much nutrition out of Coco-Pops compared to something like Weetabix. I don't really know the first thing about nutrition, but I'd have thought the body would rather see the latter and not sugar coated chocolate.

May aim here is not so much to lose weight, just improve my general diet.

I'd never advocate the use of skimmed milk for anything even cleaning the kitchen floor. You might as well pour water on your Cornflakes! I did manage to aquire the taste for semi skimmed though, it took a few months but I'm sure it was worth it?!?!?
