Sorting out my fan speeds

Hi there,

Using speedfan I've got the cpu fan a lot quieter and the cpu itself (Stock X2 3800+) is running at 34/35c idle, is that ok?

Now whats bugging me is the chipset fan. It's the loudest thing in my system and I cant seem to control it with speedfan. The board is a Asus A8N-E. Is there any other software that I can use to lower the speed of it, or is that not possible? If thats the case, could I replace it with a passive cooler or a quieter fan?

Thanks,

Mike

theres a good chance you could replace it with a zalman passive NB cooler :)

though check with anyone else on here who maybe has the board to be sure

Well you probably can reduce the chipset fan speed. You can bend the pins of the wire so that it fits on a normal 3 pin header and then use speedfan. Or solder in a resistor. I would get a zalman passive though and a 120mm fan over the top

yeah, if you can connect it to a normal 3 pin fan header thats on your mobo you should be able to control it in speed fan then. just keep an eye on your temps of it though, slowing it down may result in quite a quick increase in temps on your NB

I wouldnt really bother, not all boards have a chipset prob either so you cant tell how hot it is. Just get a zalman passive

Thanks, I'll look into it. :) Another Question, Is it normal for my HDD to be hovering around 43/44c ?
Hit the S.M.A.R.T. tab in SpeedFan then click on Perform an in-depth online analysis of this hard disk. That should tell you if its safe or not for your particular HD. Personally I think that's a little high

think that depends what make drive it is, if its a maxtor then id say thats normal, probs better than most in this weather

I was going by Maxtor...

Your hard disk is a Maxtor 6B160M0 with firmware BANC1B70.
The average temperature for this hard disk is 34C (MIN=24C MAX=46C) and yours is 34C.

Just tried that and the wire isnt long enough to go to the nearest socket. Any ideas on how to make it longer?

Akasa AK-H254 60CM 3pin fan extension cable (CB-011-AK)

Would something like that do the trick?

No that's a extension lead. You want something like the Zalman Speed controller. If you've got a Zalman CPU cooler you don't need to use the controller, use the BIOS speed controller instead (auto) so that allows you to use the fan controller elseware. ie chipset. What connector is on the chipset fan header though, thought usually the smaller types?

Im using an Arctic Freezer 64 Pro for the cpu and I've used speedfan to lower the fan to an appropriate level. Im trying to lower the level of the chipset fan, which speed fan can't do.

The connector for the chipset fan is the standard 3 pin thing.

The zalman passive thing is great, I'm using it for my dfi sli-dr expert :) . It's actually a bit cooler than stock cooler, primarily because I already got great airflow running over it.

Which one have you got?
