Hi,

I have about 8 Gig's of photos that I really need to sort out, at the moment they are just in a real mess and scattered around my machine, can anybody recommend any good software that will help me sort my life out!

I use IMatch (www.photools.com) and it is really good.. GUI isnt the best (apperently being rewritten at the moment), but you will not find another software with more functionality.

IMO you can't beat the good old fasioned windows folders. Just take a few hours out, and sort them all out. I normally start my folders off by catergory.

For example:

Events, Landscape, People, Animals.

then break those down into sub catergories, exmample

Code:
Events --->
           Cars--->
                   Thruxton (date)
                   MPH05 (date)
           Fireworks--->
                       Blabla (date)

Yeah windows folders are good.

I do mine by date then event. such as...

Code:
Photos-->
              2007-->
                         Dartmoor
                         Fireworks night
                         Prom Concert
              2006-->
                         Lake district
              ...

If that is still too unsorted you can put another layer in with month/type (landscape, people, events...)

You don't have to do it all at once. Work out a system that you are going to stick to, and start using it now, and gradually work though the old photos. A few thousand photos is not that much. I have to work with that many every trip I take.

In Windows Explorer sort by date modified and put them into folders by year, month etc. Then afterwards you can add some futher discriptions of them if you feel like it.

2006 11 31 Halloween
2006 12 25 Xmas

I mainly use Windows Explorer and the thumbnail view, but sometimes I use XnView (free) or ThumbsPlus. I dunno if theres a program that going to sort them for you in any useful way.

I have the following structure

Code:
Photo Album
---¬
      1998----¬
                   0001 01-01 - 03-01 (within this folder is all the images for these days)
                   0002 04-01 - 05-01
                   etc etc
                   0129 29-12 - 31-12

---¬
      1999----¬
                   0130 01-01 - 02-01

This system works great for me and has done since 1997 (when I got my first digital camera). Now I have over 20,000 photos which is now rapidly rising due to my SLR but the structure keeps everything perfect. I use Acdsee comments to write about each photo.

i have only just sorted mine the other week. got them going like this.

year>month>event
