Sound card/interface for recording

Okay, partly prompted by the current jam track thread and also because I want to put more stuff down at home (rather than using the band's studio system) I would like a cheapish upgrade for my sound card.

Line in for my guitar is cool, I have plenty of amp/fx to sort out the sound so I'm after something with.. with... I don't know really! I'm not sure what to look for, to be completely honest it will 99.99% be just one recording input (stereo of course, gotta love that ping pong delay!) so sheer number of inputs isn't a problem.

What comes with a breakout box (something like the old Creative ones) that would fit in the 5.25" bay, something like that? It just needs to be a decent sound and have no lag. Firewire and USB inputs aren't really appropriate as I want to entirely dump the onboard sound of my pc, so a pci sound card will take care of the line in?

Fire away please!

Nothing wrong with FireWire boxes, you can totally replace onboard audio with them. Have a look at the PreSonus Firebox and Echo AudioFire 4.

Our other guitarist just ordered a Firepod to upgrade our studio box - looks like a nice bit of kit. That Firebox looks pretty cool, a little over what I was looking to spend but I don't want to scrimp and buy tat!

My idea is that we will both/all be using the same recording software so we can work on stuff at home, then bring it back to the main studio box when we reconvene.. logistical nightmare methinks but should be interesting!
