Sound card needed for 2.1?

Got some Logitech Z-2300's which are 2.1, using the standard AC97 onboard sound, will a PCI soundcard ie. Audigy 4 improve the sound at all or will this only benefit 5.1/7.1 setups?

Quick reply appreciated, would like to order tonight if need be.
