I own a Turtle Beach Dpx21 headset that outputs 7.1 surround sound. I currently plug it in to my Asrock Extreme4 Z68 using fibre optic cable.

Will there be a noticeable difference if I buy a mid range sound card?

Tks!

None what so ever. When using digital connection, it's data that is being passed to the external device, not sound. The device, whatever it may be, then converts that data into sound. Better sound quality from a sound card, is from using the analogue connections on the card. That way, the card is converting digital data into analogue sound.

So... You could splash out on a sound card, or just buy a fibre optic cable?

The sound quality on my new computer is awful compared to my old laptop, and my speakers are a £30 headset and mic that plugs in by USB. I would have thought buying a sound card would be the way forward, but i don't know.
